The Winch’s Summer Scheme
Many children and young people in North Camden lack educational and recreational opportunities during the summer holidays. We provide activities for children and young people during every working day of the holidays, making sure that they are challenged, engaged in positive activities and supported.

The Winchester Project
37% of children in Camden are brought up below the poverty line, and many live on estates where there are few or no facilities for children and young people. The impact of this is particularly felt during the summer holidays, when a lack of opportunities can lead to social issues such as anti-social behaviour and bullying. Children who experience abuse or neglect can be especially vulnerable during the long break from school due to a lack of contact with adults who can monitor their welfare.
We run summer play schemes during every weekday in the holidays, providing children and young people with a safe place to spend time, fun and engaging activities, and a dedicated team of Youth Workers. Our provision is child-centred and focusses on developing a range of skills through arts, craft and sport activities, as well as offering flexibility for children to suggest activities. The play scheme ensures that vulnerable children are supported throughout the break from school.

Activities» Ensure that trained Early Years, play and youth workers have an exciting and varied programme of activities planned for the summer.
» Keep the building open and youth workers available in between activities so that children and young people have somewhere to go at all times.
» Promote high standards of behaviour based on clear rules, and deal with incidences of bullying to ensure that all children feel safe.
» Work with children who have been referred by social services, ensuring that they are well supported and enjoy being at The Winch.
Session reviews and observations undertaken by staff will assess the success of each activity.
To organise a range of educational and fun activities for children and young people.
Activities» Plan and engaging programme of external trips and visits for children and young people of all ages.
» Make use of the Child Council and actively seek participants’ ideas about the activities they would like to be offered.
» Ensure staff are well prepared and have planned each session.
» Reflect on the successes of activities afterwards so that the maximum possible impact is delivered at all times.
Surveys will be completed by participants to measure how much they enjoyed the activities, and parental feedback forms will be used to assess the benefit to families.
To prevent anti-social behaviour by engaging children and young people in a positive environment.
Activities» Have clear rules and expectations for behaviour and enforce these consistently.
» Create activities which actively promote positive community engagement.
» Celebrate the achievements of children and young people, using praise and positive feedback.
If children and young people continue to attend throughout the summer, rather than disengaging, then this will have been achieved and can be measured using attendance records.
To provide bespoke support for vulnerable children and young people.
Activities» Identify children who require extra support by speaking to external agencies, and through observations and self-referrals.
» Allocate Play and Youth Workers to the children who need extra support, making time for one-to-one work.
» Work with families and external agencies to address any needs that arise, e.g, with housing or benefits.
» Monitor the behaviour and appearance of children who are at risk of neglect and report any concerns.
Play and Youth Workers will monitor the progress made by the children who receive one-to-one support. Success will be measured using our character strengths framework.
The long term changes that will be brought about by our project include increased confidence, as well as increased future prospects and aspirations. By providing a safe and supportive environment, as well as the opportunity to succeed at a range of activities, we believe children's confidence will increase. Trips and exciting activities will give them new experiences, which will be memorable and will broaden their options for the future by exposing them to new ideas and opportunities.
Inadequate staffing could pose a risk and affect child to adult ratios; to deal with this we will have more staff than the minimum requirement and will ensure staff are aware of absence procedures. If the activities planned prove to be unsuitable or unattractive to the participants, the Play and Youth Work Leaders will be responsible for arranging alternatives. Risk assessments will be carried out for all elements of the programme.
At the end of the summer play scheme the Play Development Officer will create a report detailing the activities that took place, and will analyse the impact that this had on the children who benefitted from them. She will evaluate the success of each activity and share this with donors.

We are a London-based organisation working across North Camden, including Swiss Cottage, Kilburn and Belsize wards and parts of others, in which we target areas of high deprivation. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has identified the areas we work in as disadvantaged with a high concentration of local authority housing, and a high number of low income and/or single parent families. 49% more young people in Camden live in poverty than the UK average and 29% of households have no adults in work.
We work with some of the most vulnerable children and young people in Camden, many of whom have chaotic lifestyles and a lack of stability. Most are from local estates where there are few or no opportunities to engage in youth activities, and whose families are living below the poverty line; typically their families are in receipt of state benefits or have low paid jobs. A number of the children have been referred to us by Social Services and have experienced neglect, homelessness, or abuse.
The Winch works closely with partner organisations and agencies to ensure that we provide services for the children and young people who are most in need. We currently run a daily afterschool club and play schemes during the holidays, and have extensive knowledge of how to organise and implement enjoyable and educational activities. Our Play Workers are experienced, with excellent awareness of the needs of each child and a willingness to support them and their families with a range of issues.

Kim is the Play Development Officer, and leads all activities with children aged between 4 and 12. She has been working at The Winch for 14 years.
Susan is the Senior Play Worker, Kim's deputy, and has a wide awareness of the individual needs of the children who attend.
Zenobia is the Promise Work Pilot Lead and is in charge of youth work activities for vulnerable young people aged up to 16.
