Project information

Dorza Bele Project

We are working with the Dorza Bele community of 5,250 people, in southern Ethiopia in the Gamo Gofa Zone, to access clean water. We have just £8,500 to raise to make this is reality.

October 2015 - March 2016

  • Need

The community would like to reduce the distance needed to travel to unprotected water sources from where they (particularly women & children) are traveling daily to fetch water for drinking and other domestic use and they would like to eliminate incidences of diseases as a result of drinking this water.

When communities have access to clean water health improves, children can attend school, more food is grown, adults can give time to economic activities to benefit their families, equality improves and sustainability becomes a possibility.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To bring clean water to the Dorza Bele community.

» Work with the community to cap the nearby spring, dig trenches for the pipes & build a reservoir, 7 water points, 6 wash basins & 1 trough for cattle.

    What success will look like

The village will access water from a local, safe, clean source

    Aim 2

To provide health and sanitation training to the community.

» HOPE staff will teach health, hygiene & sanitation practices by going home to home, in community meetings and to the new Water Maintenance Committee

    What success will look like

The village will demonstrate behavioural change in daily sanitation habits and there will be fewer reported incidents of waterborne/diarrhoeal diseases and eye infections.

    Aim 3

    Sustainability will be achieved.

» We will establish Women's Self Help Groups (SHGs) and help to improve the communities' capacity in farming and other income generation activities.

    What success will look like

Families will be producing more healthy food and will generate necessary funds to support their families.

  • Impact

    - 5,250 people in Dorze Bele have increased daily use of clean water from newly constructed water systems
    - 50% decrease in reported incidence of water borne/diarrhoeal diseases
    - 25% decrease in reported incidences of eye infections
Our model gives communities ownership of their water system but we maintain a relationship with the community to ensure they are supported, that ownership is realised & that the communities benefit fully from the new water system.

If money is not available to start the work there will be a delay in starting the project and more time will elapse when improved health, education and sustainability are not a reality for the inhabitants of Dorza Bele.

We have a regular newsletter that will outline the progress taking place in Dorze Bele. We will also keep donors informed via our Facebook and Twitter pages and website (which is being revamped at present).

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

HOPE's goal is to bring clean water to all in the Bonke region of southern Ethiopia by 2018. Since 2009 HOPE has been the only charity working in the Gamogofa Zone (Bonke and Arbaminch). We have a good track record of embedding behavioural change and sustainability in the villages where we work. It is something we are highly committed to as an organisation.
