The Summer Big Sing

We want to kick start the holiday with an uplifting singing course, led by experts, to engage children from London. In a safe, stimulating and fun environment, the children will experience music coaching in different singing styles, fun workshops, and put on a dazzling performance for their families

July 2015 - July 2015

  • Need

Families struggle to occupy their children during the long summer holidays and often performing arts or other musical courses can be expensive. If a young person shows some musical potential it can be hard to get them engaged in a regular cultural flagship such as the London Youth Choir in term time or into a holiday program (due to financial, practical or perceived barriers.)

The London Youth Choir will host a singing summer school which will provide a ‘singing oasis’ for children to kick start their holiday with something high energy and fun. We will work with the young people to prepare a concert at the end of the course which we hope will engage their friends and families with their achievement. We will engage local schools and music service providers to signpost children in need to us for the course. As a legacy, we hope some participants may audition for LYC.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To engage children from deprived backgrounds to participate in our singing summer school.

» Working with local schools and music service providers we will be signposting and supporting children to take part.

    What success will look like

By annalysing the demographic of the participants of the summer course

    Aim 2

To give high quality tuition and inspire the participants.

» Fix a team of experienced, leading vocal practicioners and pastoral staff to run the singing summer course.

    What success will look like

By reviewing the quality of the practicioners after the course.
Asking the participants for their feedback in a questionare.

    Aim 3

A lasting legacy that some of the participants would audition to be in our weekly meeting LYC choirs

» Run relaxed and informal auditions at the summer school in small groups and engage with their families about their potential.

    What success will look like

Success would be that some of the participants could be supported to join our weekly Boys' or Girls' Choirs.

  • Impact

We hope that through engaging with more young people from a variety of backgrounds we will see greater diversity in our weekly meeting choirs and educational project work. We look forward to establishing partnerships with more local schools and music providers through this project and it would be successful if these lead to more referals for children who show potential, but need support to engage.

There is a risk that we will not get many children signing up to take part as there is a short turn around time between finding out the result of the funding outcome, and organising the summer school. We will be opening out this opportunity to our current childrens' choir members, so hope that they too will be able to help us recruit and minimize the risk.

We will report to donors with a thank you letter. We will also send photos and a report about the summer school after the event. Donors would also be welcome to attend the summer school concert.

  • Background

City Hope Church is in the heart of Bermondsey which is in the borough of Southwalk. It is on an estate, but with good access to Southwalk park and local transport networks.
Our concert venue, The Gresham Centre, is in the City of London near St Pauls Cathedral.
The two venues for our project are linked with bus and tube networks.

Children from all over London will benefit from our project, but particularly those on the local estates in Bermondsey, Peckham, Deptford and Rotherhithe. The area is very diverse and young people face many challenges growing up in the area. Southwalk has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in London, for example.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are experienced at working with young people and have a highly trained staff team. The LYC was founded in 2012 and now has a weekly membership of 200 young people who represent all 33 London boroughs. In our short history we have offered diverse opportunities which include performing live with The Rolling Stones at Glastonbury, singing in the 2014 BBC Proms Youth Chorus, singing for the turning on of the Christmas lights in Covent Garden, and recording with the BBC Singers at Maida Vale.
