ACTIVE MINDS - AXIS SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAMME
Children need a rest from formal education but, studies show some forget up to a third of what they've learned in the year in the summer break, so Axis would like to provide a fun way of learning during the summer holiday in North London for disadvantaged children free of charge.
July 2016 - August 2016
Charity information: The Axis Educational Trust
Parents struggle to engage their children in activities that reinforce learning. Summer programmes must contain fun as well as learning to not ruin the children's well-earned summer break; it needs to be free of charge because the majority of parents in our area cannot afford educational activities due to financial difficulties. Our free summer learning project will be keeping the door to fun learning wide open for the disadvantaged children.
We will provide a summer learning programme called 'Active Minds' which contains activities & courses on offer are specifically designed to keep the children's minds active by re-capping some school subjects such as English, Maths & Science as well as fun activities such as drama, music, arts & design and sports to deliver an enjoyable summer learning for the students. The proposed dates are between end of July - end of August 2016 from 10am to 3pm over 5 days a week.
To provide educational support to 100 children who are most in need during the summer holiday.
Activities» We will open a summer school where we will both teach and entertain the school aged children with English & Maths lessons and summer activity clubs.
We will have a formative and a summative assessment which will show the academic impact of our programme at the end.
To provide a safe, fun and instructive play-scheme for disadvantaged children during the summer.
Activities» We will recruit the best quality teachers & coaches to deliver a desired programme which is also supported by a well-designed curriculum & resources.
We will get feedback from teachers, students and parents which will be an indicator of the success level of the this summer provision.
To help removing financial obstacles for those who can't afford a summer school for their children.
Activities» We will provide a fresh and nutritious lunch for children over 5 week in summer holiday.
We will invite children from families most in need, by prioritising those who are eligible for free school meals or are known to have special needs .
Our summer programme will help 100 children from low-income families improve their academic skills a minimum of 1 sub-level up to close the gap with their peers in a short term. In addition, children with low aspirations, low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence will have additional time to have access to better facilities and a fun way of learning which will help them reach their potential, develop their emotional intelligence and have a better career and life expectations for the future.
Axis Educational Trust has 20 years' experience in planning and providing extended learning for more than 50 different communities in the UK so this summer provision doesn't have any foreseen risks which can affect the project however we always have a contingency plan in case the there is an issue with the following areas such as finance, staff, equipment, delivery and management. All potential unexpected risks are handled with confidence and professionally with our management team.
We will prepare an end of grant report at the end of the project and it will have the assessment, relevant feedback and questionnaire results as well as the breakdown of the expenditure.

The project will be in Hendon (LB of Barnet). The area has a significant number of parents who are entitled to get housing benefit and have low life standards while their children need to be supported academically to raise their attainment. We will hire the North London Grammar School premises with brand new facilities such as high-tech classrooms, IT suites and a large dining hall which will enable 100 children to fully benefit from the programme in a nice school environment in the vicinity.
We will invite children from poor families who need better opportunities for their development. Alongside this, by publicising this project we hope to reach more young people in need of rising horizons for the future. All of the children attending our project will be from backgrounds that definitely need extra support. Some are facing financial difficulties while others face social isolation among peer groups because of their background.
