June 2012 - January 2020
Support through Sport UK
Sport and exercise has so many proven benefits. It gives focus and purpose, builds confidence and self-esteem, provides a sense of achievement, fosters relationships, provides an outlet, is great fun, alleviates negative emotions and promotes good health. At present, only a fifth of the UK's disabled people, a tenth of older people and a tenth of women exercise regularly - and hence reap the many benefits of sport. Support through Sport UK is attempting to increase these proportions.
*By raising awareness of UK sports clubs that exist and cater for disabled people, older people etc (our website currently features over 1,300 clubs)
*By providing UK sports clubs with the resources that will help them to become more inclusive.
*By delivering event reviews for sports events that get little, if any, media coverage.
*By inspiring through the stories of role models.
*By profiling more niche sports.
*We also support international sports for development projects.
To raise awareness of the many sports clubs that exist across the UK for particular groups.
Activities» By constantly updating the relevant sections of our website: www.supportthroughsport.co.uk
By the number of clubs we feature on our website and the feedback we get from people saying that they have joined new clubs.
To help UK sports clubs to become more inclusive.
Activities» By providing them with resources to know how to do this.
» By profiling UK sports clubs that are particularly inclusive.
By the amount of resources we feature on our site and the number of club profiles. Also, by the feedback we get from clubs.
To profile UK sporting events that get little, if any, media coverage.
Activities» By sending our volunteer writers to these events to cover them.
By the number of event reviews we feature and the reactions from the teams we cover and the readers who read the event reviews.
To inspire people to take up sport.
Activities» By conducting interviews with role models who have successfully used sport to help them triumph over adversity.
» By raising awareness of lesser-known sports, such as certain disability sports.
By the feedback we get from people, the number of website hits we get and the engagement we receive through social media
To support international development sports projects.
Activities» By continuning to support the Afghanistan Rugby Federation.
» By continuing to support the Uganda Sport for Social Change Project.
» By launching a Club Partners Programme, which will 'twin' UK sports clubs with international sports clubs (so that the UK clubs can send out kit etc.)
By the amount of kit that we can provide to our international partners and the amount of other support we can give to them.
The aim is to get more people reaping the many benefits of sport and exercise. It will be difficult to determine a causal link between what we've done, and are doing, and increased UK sports participation figures - however the feedback that we get ensures us that we are inspiring a good number of people.
The risks relate to our volunteers having sufficient time to support our charity and us receiving the modest amount of funding that we need to operate. We try to mitigate against these risks by constantly recruiting new volunteers (and having a sizeable volunteer bank) and by trying to obtain financial support through a range of streams.
Through our website and social media and also through the newsletters that we are hoping to start next year.
