Project information

Chads Centenary Project

The core of our theatre was built by members in the late 50s and now needs a new roof. We will replace the roof over the auditorium, raise the roof over the stage area, replace the current lighting rig and refurbish the auditorium.

Nine months

  • Need

    An outdated roof with asbestos
    Heat loss
Lack of current ability to fly scenery and lighting
Health and safety problems for those setting lights
    Inadequate storage facilities

The old roof will be replaced with improved insulation which will add to the comfort of patrons and the reduction of our carbon footprint.
The area over the stage will be raised to allow us to fly scenery and lights
A facility to set lighting rigs from stage level will be included as will a higher level gantry, both reducing the need to use ladders.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To resolve issues related to our outdated roof and poor insulation

» The roof will be replaced and improved insulation installed

    What success will look like

New roof in place and a reduction in the cost of heating the theatre

    Aim 2

To improve the safety of people setting lighting and encourage more members to become involved

» A facility to set lighting rigs at stage level will be developed as will an overhead gantry

    What success will look like

Members who, in the past, have been reluctant to set lighting will be willing to become involved now that there is no need to

    Aim 3

    To refurbish the auditorium

» Replace the current seating and redecorate

    What success will look like

Seats will be replaced, new carpet laid and the auditorium redecorated

  • Impact

No leaks of water from the new roof
Reduction in heating costs - evidence in the bills
More comfortable temperatures in the auditorium and stage areas - feedback from actors, back stage staff and patrons
More members willing to work lighting plays because of the improved safety measures.

Loss of patrons because of the time the theatre will have to be closed.
Loss of income because we will put on 2 fewer plays.
We have dealt with this by ensuring that our studio space is now ready for use so that we can produce plays in this area, albeit to smaller audiences.
We have built in a contingency to our financial planning.

We will use our website, our regular newsletter and our programmes to feed back to donors.
