Children and Young People at The Haven
The Haven supports children and young people across Wolverhampton affected by domestic abuse and homelessness. We offer a range of activities to meet what are often complex needs presented by children. It is essential to ensure they fully recover from the trauma of abuse and to rebuild their lives.
Charity information: The Haven Wolverhampton
30.8% of children in Wolverhampton live in poverty. As such children at The Haven are facing severe, complex and multiple disadvantages. Violent homes have the same effect on the brain of a child as combat does on the brain of a soldier. Domestic abuse affects every single part of a child's life from health and welfare, to education, and social development.
By offering a variety of services tailored to meet the needs of the children we see, The Haven enables these victims of domestic abuse to regain confidence, independence and control over their own lives so they have the tools and skills to successfully re-enter mainstream society. The Haven delivers support based on therapeutic play, workshops, one-to-one sessions and group therapy sessions according to the needs of each child.
Children will have improved mental well being and improved life chances
Activities» We work through a combination of therapeutic play, workshops, one-to-one sessions and group therapy sessions to best suit individual children.
Early intervention support and programmes are vital to ensuring children are given the help they need to overcome trauma and move forward into a life free from abuse.
Children and young people will feel less isolated, will have improved relationships with their mother and be supported through school and college. Children will be less vulnerable to experiencing hardship, mental health issues and ultimately be less likely to be excluded from mainstream society now and later in life.
Children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse and homelessness have often lead chaotic lives and are faced with multiple disadvantages. Our Children and Young People's Services have considerable experience of delivering holistic support sensitively, whilst mother's are also supported through a range of The Haven's support services.
The Haven will report the success of our work through our website and through social media. We are also developing and will be regularly distributing a newsletter detailing the success of our projects and detailing anonymous case studies of women and children we have worked with.

Operating in the city of Wolverhampton, The Haven is located in an area suffering from high levels of deprivation and its associated problems. Wolverhampton stands as one of the most deprived areas in the country. Ranked as the 20th most deprived area nationally, with several severe pockets of deprivation, unemployment amongst Wolverhampton residents continues to be well above the regional and national rates.
Domestic abuse is prevalent throughout society. Children are often caught in the crossfire with 62% of children exposed to domestic abuse also being directly harmed. During 2015-2016 we supported 600 children across the services we offer due to domestic abuse and homelessness.
For over 40 years The Haven have been dedicated to designing and delivering innovative services which respond to all aspects of the unique needs of women and children suffering domestic abuse and homelessness. Research carried out in 2003 by New Philanthropy Capital identified The Haven as one of the locally based charities doing ‘excellent work’. In 2010 one of our advocacy projects was published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission as an example of national best practice.
