  • Need

    Need

Our pupils endure daily hardships rooted in poverty, such as illness and unreliable access to food or clean water. Education is one route out of poverty, with English Alive having small classes and a free or subsidized education for all. But with renting a building, we are constricted with class size and facilities as well as long term stability.

    Solution

To secure a complete education for as many pupils as possible and thus provide them with the best chance to break the cycle of poverty they are born into, our own purpose built school is required which will enable us to extend through additional classes as and when is needed as well as having large communal areas such as a school hall / gymnasium.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Aim – To build a purpose built school.

    Activities

» 1/. To build a school with educationally appropriate sized classrooms , central hall with sufficient light and indoor toilet facilities.
» 2/. To offer a free or subsidised education to a minimum of an additional 80 pupils, with an additional 20 pupils a year until school capacity.

Success will be the construction of the building .

Success will be the offering of a free or subsidised education to additional needy pupils.

  • Impact

    Impact

The project will give the school stability in ownership of a building rather than renting.
We will be able to offer a much large school population for those vulnerable children in the area/
We will have a strengthened school programme due to upgraded school buildings with purpose built areas.
We will have a safer and more hygienic school environment.

    Risk

It is important to complete this project within the time frame since the rent on the current building will expire and thus pupils will need the new school built to transfer to

  • Background

    Location

English Alive Academy is housed in three converted houses in the town of Nazret. With dirt roads outside the schools thriving with cattle, donkeys and camels. English Alive Academy is a world apart, with brightly painted walls and furniture and pupils’ work proudly displayed. The school currently supports the full time education of 260 pupils and employs 21 Ethiopian teachers and staff in a country with rampant unemployment.

    Beneficiaries

With an Ethiopian adult literacy rate of only 36%, 61% primary school enrolment and a school dropout rate of 82% education is problematic in Ethiopia. Our pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds have difficult lives with limited access to food and water- their education at English Alive Academy is their main chance at breaking the cycle of poverty.
