Educating Educators

Giving Educators in disadvantaged schools in Africa, key 21st Century Skills, such as digital literacy and so giving their students the opportunity for improved education, 21st century skills of their own and ultimately the chance to change their future.

  • Need


    There is a lack of 21st century skills such as digital literacy, amoungst Educators in disadvantaged schools in Africa. This means that just introducing technology to classrooms will have limited impact as educators will not have the skills to use these resources or the educational software content they contain and so children will not benefit from improved education in their school.


    As part of the Camara eLearning centre model, we train 5 educators from each school that receives a centre. Each educator receives a weeks training that gives them the 21st century skills needed to deliver education using ICT in classroom and ensure that the Camara eLearning centre can impact over 500 children by making them digitally literate.

    To give 20 educators key 21st skills enabling them to use ICT provided by a Camara eLearning centre


    » Run a week long training course at a training centre, delivering training developed by Camara education team.

    What success will look like

    Educators will be tested at the end of the training course and receive certificates of training when they pass the test.

  • Impact


    Educators will use their new skills to deliver education using the ICT provided in a Camara eLearning centre.

    This will in turn give their students 21st century skills including digital literacy.

    This will be measured by Camara annual monitoring & evaluation programme.

    Ultimately this should give the students the opportunity to improve their chances progressing to further education and increasing their opportunities for better livelihoods.


    There is a risk that the schools and/or educators do not attend the training week through logistics or seeing the value of a donated course.
    We have mitigated this risk by
    1. Charging a small, highly discounted, fee to the school which gives them a sense of investment in the training and so encourages attendance
    2. Courses are held on a regular basis, so any educator that misses particular dates can easily reschedule.


    Donors will receive a list of educators attending the training course, with their names, job title and name & location of the school they work in. They will also receive pictures of the training course in progress and of the educators receiving their certificates and quotes from the educators.

  • Background


    This project will take place across Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia in training locations as identified by the Camara Education Hubs operating in these countries. The project will the aimed at educators working in disadvantaged primary and secondary schools in Urban, Sub Urban and rural areas of each country as identified by the Camara teams in each country.


    The primary beneficiaries of this project will be Educators working in disadvantaged primary and secondary schools in urban, sub-urban and rural areas of the countries listed above.

    The secondary beneficieris will be the students attending these disadvantaged schools.

    Since 2007 Camara has establised over 2500 eLearning centres and trained over 12,000 educators from disadvantaged schools across East Africa. We have well established Education Hubs in each of the countries that this project will be delivered in and a central team including an Educational Specialist that will support the development and delivery of the the project.
