Gloucestershire Young Promoter's Scheme

We want to establish an innovative, new county-wide Young Promoters Scheme to empower young people (aged 14-19) to create, manage and coordinate professional performance activity for their communities. The scheme will work with youth theatres and Scout groups across the rural Gloucestershire.

January 2015 - December 2018

Charity information: AIR in G (Arts in Rural Gloucestershire)

AIR in G (Arts in Rural Gloucestershire)
  • Need

The scattered nature of Gloucestershire’s communities, lack of local cultural events, poor transport infrastructure and the county’s low average income, create barriers for people who wish to participate in the arts. Young people in rural areas have fewer chances to engage with cultural opportunities or to benefit from acquiring the skills associated with participating in the arts.

With facilitation and training support from AIR in G the project will provide an unprecedented, hands-on opportunity for young people to develop the skills to become the culturally creative, motivated, dynamic theatre promoters of the future. The project structure involves three years development, building towards a sustainable ongoing programme that will benefit substantial numbers of young people (as leaders and as arts audiences). This pioneering model also has potential to be replicated.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To empower young people across Gloucestershire to promote events in their local community.

» Provide training, mentoring and financial subsidy for performances until groups become sustainable.

    What success will look like

By the number of young people who take part, the number of performances held, participant and audience feedback and the number of Arts Awards achieved.

    Aim 2

To provide intergenerational contact opportunities for communities across Gloucestershire.

» Each performance will bring people of all ages together in each community.

    What success will look like

Surveys of audience members at each event will enable us to monitor the diversity of our audience. Leaders will also report on each event.

    Aim 3

To provide access to high quality arts events in rural areas that otherwise have poor provision.

» This scheme will supplement our core activity of tacking social isolation in rural areas by offering access to high quality artistic events.

    What success will look like

Quality will be closely monitored via the scheme coordinators and only artists of the highest quality will be supported to ensure the best possible calibre of event is staged.

  • Impact

The skills achieved via the scheme will give the young people involved the confidence to promote events in the future, be that in a year or a decade. We will also train the Scout leaders so they are able to continue training their young people and promoting events long after the project has finished.

The main risk will be that events don't attract significant audiences, however we have a track record of success over 15 years with community events such as this and will make sure that the marketing for each event is appropriate to mitigate this risk.

We will provide an annual report outlining all events held, number of participants, Arts Awards achieved etc. We will also keep an up to date Facebook page running for the duration of the project so that donors can check our progress / contribute to ongoing discussions should they wish to.
