Our Nissen Hut is now open but needs to be finished. This includes:

* Completing the office
* Water-proofing the outer walls
Once this is complete, then it can be used as an education facility for schools and groups to use to learn more about the Forts role in British history

  • Need

    Groups visiting the Fort have no shelter should the weather turn bad. When the weather turns bad, they have no option but to either 'grin and bare it' or to cancel a trip.

    The Nissen hut provides the much needed shelter for groups for everyone who visits the Fort.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    1. Repair the floor. The original WWII floor is in a state of disrepair and creates a trip hazard.

    » Mark out the extents of the damage. This ensures that as much of the original floor can be saved as possible.
    » Remove damaged flooring as marked in Activity 1.
    » Re-skim with self-leveling material.

    What success will look like

    The floor will be solid and no longer eroding away

    Aim 2

    Clad the external wooden walls with shiplap (or similar material).

    » Apply shiplap material.

    What success will look like

    Walls will be water tight, and not leak.

    Aim 3

    Complete the office.

    » Attach the remaining wood to the frame.
    » Insert the window
    » Attach the door.

    What success will look like

    The office will be usable by the Friends of Shoreham Fort

    Aim 4

    Kit out the office with IT equipment and a projector for presentations.

    » Purchase a computer, projector and or laptop.

    What success will look like

    Projector will be able to used for presentations for school, groups and meetings.

  • Impact

    Long term the Nissen hut will be able to be used for many years. Without this work, the structure will eventually be damaged and unusable.

    No Risks

    Doners will be able to see the progress via our website, facebook and newsletters.

  • Background

    Shoreham Fort is a unique location on the South Coast, not only used during war time, but also as one of the first film studios in the UK. The Fort is a Palmerston folly, and was used as a prototype for Fort Nelson in Portsmouth.

    Local school children will have the opportunity to visit the Fort and learn about it's history.
    Any group and individual that also visit the Fort also benefit.
