Aspire - The LYC Vocal Leadership Programme
The LYC Aspire programme will provide an innovative series of workshops and training for the next generation of vocal leaders. Participants will be drawn from the membership of our five choirs (which represent all 33 London boroughs) and schools, universities and music hubs across the city.
January 2015 - December 2015
Charity information: London Youth Choir
As LYC expands and develops to support the growing needs of the city's aspiring singers, we have noticed a significant lack of expert practitioners in the field of choral training that are specifically trained to work with young people.
Young singers now require a multitude of skills to support their professional development needs and there is limited training available to support this.
LYC will launch a new Vocal Leadership Programme in January 2015 which will support our mission to create and support the vocal leaders of the future.
Entitled Aspire, the programme will provide a series of workshop sessions and practical application experiences throughout the 2015 musical programme for advanced members of LYC and interested parties from schools, universities and music hubs across the city. Participants will receive training and mentoring from the UK's finest vocal leaders.
Train, support and mentor new vocal leaders to a high standard
Activities» Provide a series of 10 interactive workshop sessions, covering advanced conducting techniques, musicianship, educational psychology & self promotion.
» Provide practical, on-going training experiences and opportunities through working with LYC's 5 constituent choirs.
» Provide professional support and mentorship from the UK's finest vocal leaders.
Success will be demonstrated by having trained 10 new leaders who are able to lead and support LYC's younger choirs by the end of the programme.
Connect and network with aspiring leaders, music teachers and music hub workers across London.
Activities» Provide opportunities for external participants to attend and take part in the Aspire programme at no cost to themselves.
» Continue to build and develop a database of relevant professional contacts across London to support the Aspire programme & future development of LYC.
Success will be demonstrated through the creation of a database of our newly established links with music hub contacts, local schools and vocal practitioners across London.
Make excellent quality tuition available for young people, irrespective of background.
Activities» Funding from the Big Give Christmas Challenge would enable LYC to run the Aspire programme with no financial outlay required from participants.
» Invite, support and encourage wide participation through advertising and promotion on social media platforms.
Success will be demonstrated by young leaders from diverse backgrounds participating and completing the Aspire programme.
Pioneer a new programme of study for aspiring vocal leaders.
Activities» Curate activity content with the support and advice of our professional counterparts in the choral education training field.
» Employ renowned choral practitioners and vocal leaders to deliver the workshops and training.
Success will be demonstrated by national singing charities and educational institutions acknowledging that we have developed a new and credible vocal training programme.
A key part of LYC's long term vision is to create and nurture the vocal leaders of our future; the Aspire programme will play a catalytic part in helping us to achieve that aim. A key re-quisite for the successful musician in the 21st century is adaptability. Success will be demonstrated through the development of confidence and leadership of our participants, their ability to support and mentor younger peers and their potential to act as role models in the wider musical community.
There is a risk that our expert practitioners could pull out of leading the workshop series. We have dealt with this through fostering close associations with a broad base of professionals across the UK who would be able to 'step in' if the occasion arises.
We will provide a series of three reports for donors of the Aspire programme which will detail: the final 'set up' for the project and provide potential dates for visits, a mid-term update and a final report with case studies, statistics and participants' feedback.

We currently work in central London and are based at The Gresham Centre; a renowned centre for musical outreach. Our membership, which currently stands at 230 young people, is drawn from all 33 London boroughs.
Primarily, the Aspire programme will benefit its direct participants; the more advanced members of our choirs and young people outside the organisation who aspire to further their journey in musical leadership. The newly trained leaders will go on to support and mentor their younger peers and the wider musical community. Engagement in the programme will also benefit local music hubs, vocal leaders across London and the LYC staff and voluntary staff team who will receive additional training.
LYC is committed to developing the next generation of young vocal leaders. Our organisation has the infrastructure in place to successfully run the Aspire programme which would complement and support our current activities for young people. We employ and have access to an excellent team of professional choral trainers who will provide on-going support and advice with regards to the development of this innovative programme.
