Gateway Extra: ESOL Training in Practice

Gateway Extra will use the teaching of English and the proactive support in education to empower young people who are asylum seekers, refugees, have been trafficked or are at risk of trafficking to communicate, have a voice and effectively invest in their futures.

  • Need


    Education providers across the UK are cutting services to young people who have little or no English. Therefore, young people who are seeking asylum, have been trafficked or are at risk of trafficking have little opportunities and access to learn English and invest into their futures. The Baca Charity knows that in the coming year services in Leicestershire are being dramatically cut and we need to act in order to keep providing young people with the chance to communicate and have a voice.


    We will employ a Co-ordinator who is a trained and experienced educator in English for Speakers of Other Languages to work alongside the young people that we support and accommodate across Leicestershire. They will support young people (3 hours Mon- Fri) to learn English, access mainstream courses and advocate for their education with providers by actively developing young people's dreams, strengths, skills and aspirations. They will work and travel across Leicestershire to fulfil this remit

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To teach young people up to Pre Entry Level English (ESOL)


    » Pre Entry Level English lessons for all young people in Baca care of up to 3 hours a day.
    » Broker exams with local providers to ensure that young people pass Pre Entry Level English giving them access to additional courses.
    » Set up opportunities for young people to continually practice their English in real life situations to develop confidence and skills.

    What success will look like

    Attendance charts - target 80-100% positive attendance
    Student files, lessons reports and monthly reports showing progression and learning
    Exam results and provider acceptance.

    Aim 2

    Support and Advocate for young people within education settings especially in English learning.


    » Visit young people in colleges and within education providers and meet with their teachers.
    » Act as the 'parent' in parent-teacher events in order to provide the support and guidance that young people need to keep on track.
    » Monitor attendance at colleges and educational providers to make sure that young people are making the most of opportunities available to them.
    » Devise additional English lessons to support young people in their learning within educational providers.

    What success will look like

    Education provider attendance - target 80-100%.
    Teacher interaction and progress reports.
    100% of young people in mainstream education/courses within 9 months of arrival.

    Aim 3

    Put together a career plan for Young People that take into account their dreams, aspirations, skills


    » Meettings with young person's Support Worker/Social Worker to learn about the young person - what they like, what they want to do, academic ability.
    » Meetings with young person to talk about what they want for their futures and to discuss expectations/opportunties.
    » Devise a holistic and dynmanic plan to help a young person achieve personal goals
    » Devise English lessons and career workshops around these goals to help a young person continually drive towards their futures.

    What success will look like

    Career Plan that shows progression with SMART goals being achieved and recognised by young people.
    Ownership of young people for their aspirations in monthly feedback sessions.

  • Impact


    This project will ensure that young people who have complicated and traumatic pasts are enabled to learn to communicate in an economic environment that is continually cutting their opportunities for success. We will ensure access to learning an opportunities that will unlock successful futures through advocacy and dedicated support, demostrated by 95% of young people achieiving successful transition of from care at 18+ into dedicated and realistic career paths how to communicate in English.


    The main risk is that the Co-ordinator decides to leave Baca in the middle of the project. We will mitigate this risk by training up volunteers within the Gateway project who could take on the role should this happen. We will also make sure that the Co-ordinator works closely with Support Workers to ensure knowledge sharing. In giving the Co-ordinator opportunities of further learning through training that will help with the rentention of this individual within the organisation.


    Funders of the project will be given a quarterly report in email format with will detail the successes of the aims of the project eg. attendance rates, quotes from teachers etc. We will detail a quarterly case study of a young person and update on the activities and any changes to the project.

    Budget - Project Cost: £15,000

  • Background


    The project will be delivered in various locations across Leicestershire but working with local authorities from across the Midlands including Northamptonshire County Council, Leicestershire County Council, Rutland County Council, West Midlands Consortium Councils, and Nottingham City Council.


    - Young People aged 16-19 years who are seeking asylum, given refugee status, have been trafficked or are at risk of trafficking.
    - All young people are unaccompanied (they do not have parents in the UK) and are Looked After Children or Children in Care.
    - All young people will have been referred to Baca from local authorities that we are in contract with.
    - They will be young people from countries such as Vietnam, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Kurdistan, Morocco, Syria.

    Why Us?

    Baca has 8 years experience working young people having supported and accommodated over 100 young people ranging from 15-21 years of age.
    We are known as a specialist provider by local and national government and have been commended as the current sole provider of supported accommodation for trafficked children in the UK.
    We ensure that 100% of our young people do not go missing where the national average is that 60% of this cohort of young people go missing within 48 hours.

    Ana De Almieda

    Ana will be our ESOL Co-ordinator. She is a trained ESOL teacher and has over 18 years of experience working in colleges as a teacher.

    Leicestershire County Council Education For Children In Care

    Baca has been named the strategic partner with EdCiC and they will refer young people into the project who are 16 years and below.

    East Midlands/West Midlands Local Authorities

    Local authorities will refer young people into the care of Baca (supported accommodation) giving automatic enrollment into the Gateway Extra project

    Jimmy Zachariah

    Jimmy is the Support Manager at Baca and will give Ana supervision and direction within the project.
