  • Need

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease which affects the brain and spinal cord causing problems with muscle movement, balance and vision. There is no cure for MS & there are more than 100,000 in the UK with the disease. In east Kent alone, there are more than 1800 people with MS & between 15-20 people being newly diagnosed in this region each month.
The Kent MS Therapy Centre is a completely self funded charity & we would like to secure funding towards the subsidised element of Physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy has a range of benefits from improving physical health to enhanced quality of life for people with MS. It improves fitness, chronic fatigue and reduces muscle spasticity. It can improve balance and posture.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide Physiotherapy sessions to people with Multiple Sclerosis who live in Kent

» Ensure that we have a fully equipped Physiotherapy and Gym suite as well as a Neurological Physiotherapist to support members during these sessions

    What success will look like

Success will be to have the Physiotherapy and Gym suite fully equipped and staffed to enable it to be used to its maximum potential.

  • Impact

The project will enable more people with MS to access Neuro Physiotherapy.
The Physiotherapist will fill in a monitoring and evaluation sheet after each session to record the benefits and track the progress of each member.
Success will be defined by a decrease in waiting time for Physiotherapy and Gym sessions and more of our Members having access to this therapy.

The risks would be that there are more members wanting to use the Gym and Physiotherapy suite than spaces available. We would monitor the number of sessions being requested by our Members and train volunteers to help with additional demand.

Funders of this project will be updated on the uptake for the Gym and Physiotherapy sessions at the beginning of 2018.

  • Background

The Kent MS Therapy Centre is located in Canterbury and is the only dedicated centre in the whole of South and East Kent.
There are over 1800 people suffering from Multiple Sclerosis in this region and demand for the Centre is growing all of the time.
In January 2015 we opened a brand new purpose built therapy centre which is located in Canterbury. We now have a dedicated Gym and exercise room as well as a dedicated room for Physiotherapy.

People with Multiple Sclerosis who live in Kent and require access to Neuro Physiotherapy and a specialist Gym will benefit from this project.

  • Why Us?
