To provide the continuation of nursery education facilities to c. 500 Gambian 3-7 year old children thus maximising their chances of success in their on going education
December 2016 - December 2017
African Oyster Trust
There is a general lack of well equipped nursery facilities in Gambia with State education not starting until 7 years of age
The African Oyster Trust supports four nursery schools providing learning for around 500 children. However, there is an on going need to raise funding to ensure the continued provision of this quality education in well maintained and equipped facilities
Provision of exemplary nursery education in safe, well equipped and well maintained facilities
Activities» Continued assessment and training of teaching staff. Regular monitoring of children's progress. Outside feedback from Dept of Education
» Continued maintenance of four nursery schools
» On going provision of equipment and materials
Success will be: education of c.500 3 to 7 year old children
Good reports from children, parents, Dept. of Education and outside assessors
Smooth progress to Lower Basic School
Demonstrable improvement in educational achievement of local children.
English language skills are key as the population speak any one of nine tribal languages. Lower Basic School teaching is in English only so children would benefit from a head start by attending nursery.
Improved access to nursery education in an areas where demand far exceeds supply. Success to be demonstrated by continuing good reports from children, parents, dept. of education and outside assessors
We are well accustomed to dealing with the usual challenges of working in a third world environment and have good learning from several year's experience
Our web site carries regular updates of all projects, blogs from visitors and reports from our representative based in The Gambia.
We also publish regular newsletters

Our nursery schools are located at Serrakunda (Gambia’s biggest city), Jappineh, Jarra Central (one of the poorest districts in Gambia), Gunjur (South Gambia) and Talinding (within Serrekunda, the most populous area of urban Gambia within the Kombo Region).
Average family incomes are often under £1 per day. Families tend to be large and parents often leave toddlers alone, or with a sibling, while seeking work. Formal schooling does not begin until age 7.
By providing nursery facilities, the children will have a head start in schooling and the parents will appreciate having a safe environment where they can leave their children.
We have built up a lot of experience from our four nursery schools in The Gambia, all of them are fully enrolled with an average of 100 children attending.
They receive exemplary ratings from Dept of Ed and visitors alike.
Graduates go on to do well at Lower Basic Schools.
We supervise all of these very closely and know what we are doing. As we are a small charity all the funds raised go directly to the projects on the ground.
