Parkinson's UK Specialist Nurse Appeal
To provide funds for our Parkinson's UK Specialist Nurse Appeal who provide expert and vital care to people with parkinson's and those around them.
We have provided funds for 350 nurses to date and aim to have 400 in post by 2015 to ensure no one faces Parkinson's alone.
Charity information: Parkinson's UK
We estimate that there are nearly 20,000 people living with Parkinson’s in the UK, who do not have access to a Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse. Specialist nurses are a lifeline for people living with the condition. They provide expert knowledge and medical support to enable people to stay independent and manage their complex symptoms. We have provided funds for 350 Parkinson’s Specialist Nurses to date but need more to ensure that everyone affected by the condition has access to this vital service.
Our Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse Appeal will provide funds to train more specialist nurses to offer vital support to the thousands of people, with this devastating condition, who need it the most. They make a real difference by offering guidance on matters such as managing medication or even providing a walking stick to allow people to leave their home and also helping to reduce hospital admissions. It is our aim to ensure that no one has to face Parkinson’s alone.

What success will look like
All priority areas across the UK will have a Parkinson's Specialist Nurses in post.
Having more specialist nurses in place will create significant savings across health and social care services. For example, nurses help people with Parkinson's maintain their mobility resulting in fewer falls and thus, emergency admissions to hospital. We will keep an up to date record of all specialist nurse posts across the UK and a list of prioritised areas that have a gap in this vital service to ensure that no one faces Parkinson’s alone.
There is a risk that we could not raise enough funds to provide nurses in priority areas or that local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG's) may not take on the post of a specialist nurse. To deal with this, we have a strategy to meet our fundraising targets and our Policy and Service Improvement team continue to lobby central and local governments to highlight the need for more Parkinson’s Specialist Nurses.
We will provide an annual report on how much has been raised and a breakdown of those priority areas which have been funded as a result of a funders involvement.

Whereas our appeal covers the UK, we have identified an urgent need for a Parkinson's Specialist Nurses in the East London region where there is currently no coverage.
We estimate that approx. 500 people with Parkinson's in East London will benefit from having access to a Parkinson's Specialist Nurse. However, specialist nurses help more than just the person with the condition as they provide valuable support to carers, friends and family.
We are the only research and support chairty dedicated to Parkinson's in the UK and have been successfully provinding funds for specialist nurses since 1996. We have 350 specialist nurse posts in place to date and need approximately 400 in total by 2015 to deliver our vision of ensuring that no one faces Parkinson's alone.
