The Summer Runaway
The Summer Runaway is a two week sleep away camp which takes place in the Summer Holidays for children who cannot afford a summer holiday.
August 2016 - August 2016
Drama Expressions For Children
Our users are children from low income, disadvantaged or dysfunctional homes, who are forced to remain in the city during the summer holidays, bored and resentful with nothing to do.
This often causes essentially good, well-behaved children to resort to anti-social and criminal activities, to keep themselves busy.
The Summer Runaway will solve this issue, by providing a fantastic summer experience - free of charge - to those that cannot afford a holiday. At our project the children are treated to a wide range of exciting in-house or outdoor activities; opportunities that they never have during the year. They also develop lasting relationships with our mentors and both parties gain tremendously from these rewarding relationships.
Provide an exciting range of leisure and recreational activities at our project.
Activities» Swimming at an indoor leisure center.
» Snow Tubing
» Speed Boating
» Nightly socials, barbecues, singing and dancing
The children will provide feedback on how they enjoyed these exciting exotic experiences, which they never have a chance to enjoy throughout the year.
Provide the opportunity for children to develop and express their talents through a drama project.
Activities» Divide children into groups and with a leader's assistance create a dance, song - act, choir, skit - as part of a full show.
» Assign children to sew costumes and collect props for the show.
» Perform the show for an audience.
Success will be a fantastic performance which will excite both the children and the audience.
Enable young leaders to lead some project thus they will gain leadership qualities.
Activities» The young leaders will have the opportunity to create productions for the performance. They will also plan and lead some minor activities throughout.
We will have exit interview and distribute questionnaires to hear how the leadership skills acquired, helped our leaders. Success will mean that our leaders are more confident .
Users should learn new skills for life. Some can be used for employment in the future.
Activities» Users will learn new skills via our fruit carving, swimming and cake decoration sessions. They will also learn skills like singing, dancing and drama.
» Skills for life-We will have workshops with speakers who will preach various topics like eating healthy, social skills and managing their finance.
Users will have tangible items to demonstrate success-cakes, carved fruit... We will ask them to provide feedback on how useful they find the skills that they learnt.
The children will develop and express their talents which will boost their confidence, because they will now know what they are capable of accomplishing.
We aim for the children to develop long term relationships with mentors who will help them throughout the year. Our users often feel isolated in their struggles, without anybody to confide. Besides, users and leaders will gain major skills. The hands on skills will eventually be a source of income. Feedback during the year will prove this.
At our trips there is always the risk of bad weather which could affect the quality of the experience. We will always check with the weather forecast to arrange our projects in line with the predicted weather. Additionally we will also make sure to have alternate plans in place, just in case.
Funders of our projects will receive a bi-annual update, as well as newsletters. We will provide any grant monitoring required.

Our Summer Runaway will take place in Storthes Hall Park, a college in Huddersfield which is perfectly suited to our needs. They allow us to use their flats, and large Venue Hall, which we use for eating and social activities. The area is a beautiful countryside with lots of trips nearby.
The 180 children attending are our main beneficiaries, however the 30 young volunteers probably gain just as much.
The children gain from being in a safe structures environment throughout their summer holidays, enjoy an array of thrills they never have throughout the year, make new friends and gain new skills. Our young leaders benefit through interacting and leading the children, therefore gaining skills and experiences which boost their confidence and their employment opportunities.
