Summer Runaway

Summer Runaway is a 2 week retreat in the holiday for 220 children, disadvantaged by poverty and its challenges.Holidays is a time to rejuvenate-but our children hate holidays.To them it connotes poor nourishment, boredom and consequent home tension.Our retreat offers Friends, Fun and Food.

  • Need


    S.Runaway fills 3 key needs which ensure that all kids merit a healthy & happy childhood.
    Food;Our users cannot afford well nourishing meals.
    Friends; Our users are from ethnic minority groups and many are socially isolated. Many do not speak fluent English and are thus less accepted by peers.
    Fun; 80% of our users live in overcrowded homes. and many parents work during holidays to make ends meet.They lack space to play indoors, adults to supervise outdoor play, and funds for trips.


    The Summer Runaway will solve this issue, by providing a fantastic summer experience - free of charge - to those that cannot afford a holiday. At our project the children will be treated to a wide range of exciting indoor and outdoor activities; opportunities that they never have during the year. We will offer exciting trips and insightful workshops, which will help them cope with their lives. We will also provide nourishing meals. Children will socialize in a fun setting and make new friends

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Provide Fun; a brilliant range of leisure and recreational activities as elected by users.


    » Trips such as swimming at an indoor leisure center, snow tubing, and speed boating.
    » Innovative Arts n Crafts like jewelry design, fabric painting, cake ,fuit and floral design.
    » Daily sports includes swimming, netball, aerobics, and hiking.
    » Nightly activities like barbecues, camp fires, singing and dancing.

    What success will look like

    The children will fill feedback forms and volunteer to participate in exit interviews on how they enjoyed these exciting exotic experiences, which they never had a chance before.

    Aim 2

    Provide the opportunity for children to develop and express their talents through a drama project.


    » Divide children into groups and with a leaders' assistance, create a dance, song - act, choir, skit - as part of a full show.
    » Assign children to sew costumes and collect props for the show.
    » Perform the show for an audience.

    What success will look like

    Success will be a fantastic performance which demonstrate skills and confidence developed via preparation for show. We will show videos/ photos.

    Aim 3

    Friendships and relationships; a chance for socialising,teamwork and leadership skills development


    » Young people will post ideas for activities in our suggestion box. They will vote for 4 young leaders who will plan and lead the two week program.
    » Additional leaders will have the opportunity to create and lead productions for the drama performance.
    » A social haven-ample time to spend with friends in an accepting and relaxed environment

    What success will look like

    We will observe and report about the individual and overall social atmosphere of project. We will report bullying incidents and compare it to the users' schools rates.

    Aim 4

    Users should learn new skills for life. Some can be used for employment in the future.


    » Users will learn new practical skills via our sessions inc. fruit carving, swimming, cake decorating, singing, dancing and drama.
    » Skills for life-We will have workshops with speakers who will preach various topics like eating healthy, social skills and managing their finance.

    What success will look like

    Users will have tangible items to demonstrate success-cakes, carved fruit... We will ask them to provide feedback on how useful they find the skills that they learnt.

    Aim 5

    Raise awareness about nourishing meals.


    » Provide 3 nutritious meals daily
    » Provide open range of healthy snacks and fruits
    » Workshop on preparing nutritious meals utilizing basic core to empower users to always be able to eat healthy.

    What success will look like

    Photos of empty plates and content kids as well as healthy eating knowledge , will prove. Children will be invited to comment about this on feedback forms and at farewell meeting.

  • Impact


    Fun,friends &food for kids is not solitary benefits-it is the basis for a healthy childhood which empowers a healthy adulthood. Additionally our sports and trips offers users the chance to unwind from year long accumulated stresses so that they are refreshed for school and invigorated to learn.Trips to museum and new sights broadens their horizons.Skill and friendships is a gift for them for life.
    We will demonstrate-by taking statistics 3 months into school year on improvement on core areas.


    Bad weather could affect the quality of our activities therefore we will check with weather forecast to arrange our projects in line with the predicted weather and arrange contingency plans in case of rain. We will also have first aides on-site in case of injuries. We will also arrange with the transport company to have backup vans in case of a break down. The cook will also have pre-packed meals, in case of equipment breakdown.
    We have adequate safeguarding policies and measures in line NSC


    Funders of our projects will receive a bi-annual update, as well as newsletters. We will provide any grant monitoring required.

  • Background


    Our Summer Runaway will take place in The RNC in Hereford, which is perfectly suited to our needs. They allow us to use their flats, and large Venue Hall, which we use for eating and social activities. The area is a beautiful countryside with lots of trips nearby. We have sole use of premises which ensures the complete safety of our users. {WE HAVE £5000 SECURED. THIS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE COST OF PREMISES WHICH IS £25000. OUR BUDGET FOR BIG GIVE IS £20000 PREMISES.}


    Our direct users are 220 teenagers living in London who are affected by poverty. Our adolescent volunteers will simultaneously benefit from skill, experience and social time acquired. The children gain from being in a safe structured environment throughout their summer holidays,enjoy an array of thrills they never have throughout the year, make new friends and learn new skills. Our young leaders will benefit through interacting and leading the children, therefore gaining skills

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    Our charity has been running summer sleep-away camps for over 30 years and other children projects too. Our staff are experienced and successfully managed these projects. We have a group of mature women who serve as mentors during the summer program. They are in touch with the parents and ensure that the children have all their requirements. Additionally, our trustee Mrs Landau is a registered carer for special needs children giving her a profound understanding of children's' needs.

    She organized this project for over 30 years. She manages it all; from renting premises, to hiring staff and also the minor activities

    Shoshi is powerhouse of energy who just makes the camp happen, with her constant good cheer, positive attitude and hearty laugh.

    Esther Frankel

    She is our finance officer and ensures that income and expenditure are all under control.
