Learning for Life
We're working with adults with learning disabilities and autism to help them to build skills, self-esteem, and confidence so that they can live independently, make choices, and take part in their community. We need funding for a self advocacy programme using drama to explore everyday situations.

People with learning disabilities and autism struggle to get their voices and views heard . They may need help to develop communication skills, and they may need to learn how to use technology that enables communication. For some people, imagining a situation is impossible. Autistic people often find it difficult to read other people and so can get very anxious in social situations. But more people want to live independently, and they want the chance to work. This project makes learning fun.
We'll use drama and ICT to support people's learning about how to manage everyday situations, eg travelling independently, going shopping, being in a crowd, making choices, expressing feelings, getting a job, and moving into your own home. In our pilot, iPads and specialist apps opened up exciting and creative opportunities for communication. Each participant will get their own iPad. Drama gives people the chance to try out and practise different approaches. We'll video their achievements.
10 people with learning disabilities/ autism feel more confident in managing everyday situations.
Activities» We will run 12 sessions exploring tricky situations and supporting participants to practise different ways of dealing with them
» We will support participants to form a self advocacy group that can continue beyond this project.
» We will purchase iPads for participants, supporting them to find the apps that enhance their communication and meet their individual needs
What success will look like
We'll use the Life Star to measure distance travelled for each individual. There'll be video, written, and photographic evidence and that will be captured in our evaluation.

Activities» We will use the Life Star (Outcomes Star) to help participants to set out the things they want to change and to measure their progress .
» We will hold an event at the end of the project to share what we've learnt with a wider audience.
» We'll evaluate the project, create a report, and plan how to build our learning into our ongoing programmes. We'll share learning with others.
What success will look like
Project participants will record changes that make them feel happier, more confident, and more fulfilled. Evaluation will look at impact of using drama and the iPad.
Participants will develop new strategies to enable them to live more autonomously. They'll know how to constructively problem-solve. They'll be less dependent on others and use their peer group to maintain progress. By sharing the success with others, we'll enable a wider community of learning disabled/autistic people to benefit from the project. We'll present the findings at the Wandsworth Learning Disability Provider Forum, disseminating best practice and sharing skills with others.
We're looking to engage drama workers with expertise in this area. If they're not available, we may find it difficult to identify alternatives. We have a second choice provider if this happens.
Families and carers may sabotage progress made. To mitigate, we'll communicate the aims and progress of the project and link in with parents' groups -eg Mencap.
People may lose their iPads. We'll ensure that they're all registered and content is backed up regularly, and that insurance is in place.
We'll commission an evaluator to evaluate the project and compile a report at the end of the project, which will be sent to donors. We'll also regularly post activities and developments on the Share Facebook page and in our newsletter.

We're based in Battersea, near Clapham Junction station in the borough of Wandsworth.
People with learning disabilities and autism who are not in work and are almost all dependent on benefits will benefit. 90% live in social housing, whether in council accommodation or in supported living.
Wandsworth is a wealthy borough with pockets of poverty. 52% Share's students are from BME communities. 27% of our students come from 3 wards where there is significant deprivation.
The wider learning disability/autism community will benefit through our link with LD Provider Forum.
We have a great track record working with people with learning disabilities. We've been funded by major funders eg Lloyds and City Bridge Foundation because they trust our work. We're well known to local professionals and families. We have a skilled staff team to support this work and ensure the learning carries through to our other activities. Our students and their families rated us very highly when we surveyed them recently. We're an Investor in People and accredited training provider.

Vicki provides specialist drama work for people with learning disabilities and autism. She's had great results at Hammersmith & Fulham Mencap.
