  • Need

The elderly from the Gypsy and Traveller community can find themselves isolated, lonely and lacking in opportunities to mix socially.

Our project is trying to offer the isolated, unheard elderly of the Gypsy and Traveller community regular opportunities to meet, take part in productive activity and meet representatives from local agencies.

Our proposal will make a difference because:

We have put the community at the centre of developing our proposal.
We have engaged with the community to seek their views and structure something that they want and are asking for.
It will grow confidence, resilience and community spirit and enable the community themselves to be more likely to seek support and intervention, rather than go without or have something ‘non-GRT orientated’ targeted at them. (GRT = Gypsy, Roma & Traveller)

  • Aims

    Aim 1

See a more confident, resilient community.

» Use funds to deploy a part time Community Champion from the Gypsy & Traveller community.
» Offer regular social activities for the elderly Gypsies & Travellers.

    Observations from sessions.
    Community voice feedback.
    Feedback from agencies.
    Evidence of frequency of engagement.

    Aim 2

See greater social inclusion and integration on the Gypsy, Traveller sites of Cardiff.

» Offer regular social activities for the elderly Gypsies & Travellers.
» Invite local agencies and non-site residents to attend the social activities in order to further community cohesion.

    Observations from sessions.
    Community voice feedback.
    Feedback from agencies.
    Evidence of frequency of engagement.
Evidence of attendance from agencies & others

  • Impact

We will know if our work has been successful because, we will have a Community Champion attending every Gypsy, Roma & Traveller site in the area, enablinga regular programme of community activities with site residents and supporting agenciesso that there is regular consultation. The community will feel less isolated and fragmented, as their voices begin to be heard and they are enabled to network socially.

We will demonstrate this using the methods noted above.

Non-engagement - The Community Champion will have instant trust with community members as they will be from the community.
Non-engagement from agencies - this is highly unlikely as agencies frequently complain about not being able to gain access easily to site residents.

We will report regularly via our charity website and through quarterly reports highlighting success against our aims, We will also produce an end of project report and publish this on our website.

£480 Travel expenses Paying for basic travel expenses of community champion
  • Background

The project will benefit the site residents of Rover Way and Shirenewton caravan sites in Cardiff initially, with further activities being planned for Pontypool and Cwmbran. The Caravan sites are isolated places, devoid of much activity in particular for the elderly. The residents are mainly from Gypsy and Traveller backgrounds.

The project will mainly benefit the elderly residents of the local Gypsy and Traveller sites. Indirectly there will be benefits for the whole Gypsy & Traveller community of the locality and for local agencies and bodies who would like greater access to Gypsies & Travellers in order to support and provide better services.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are a Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community development organisation at heart. We are led by Gypsies and Travellers, we are about Gypsies and Travellers, we are for Gypsies and Travellers. We believe that the community can be developed to become fully accepted participants in mainstream society while still retaining their distinct culture and heritage.

Being from the Gypsy community and with years of experience of developing community projects, we know we can gain the trust of people.
