  • Need

Inner city Bristol has a high incidence of mental health problems. Social isolation and the lack of opportunities for creative expression makes these problems worse. Stepping Out Theatre is the country's leading mental health theatre group and has produced a large scale community play with 60 - 80 local mental health service users in Bristol and the surrounding area every year for the last 17 years.

Service users say that involvement in these productions is a crucial part of them staying in good mental health. The lengthy workshop, rehearsal and performance process takes 5 - 6 months and provides a focus of rewarding creative activity, social connection and a sense of achievement for all those taking part. These have a hugely beneficial impact on people's mental health reducing their dependence on medication and psychiatric services and reducing the risk of hospitalisation

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To decrease social isolation and improve life chances among mental health service users.

» A busy twelve month programme of meetings, rehearsals and performances.

Monitoring, evaluation and feedback systems will demonstrate an improvement in mental health among the service users we work with

  • Impact

Our project will improve the long term life chances of the mental health service users we work with. They will gain new skills, including life skills and social skills. They will improve in confidence and self esteem, and experience greater social connection. They will show reduced dependence on psychiatric services and a higher take up of educational, voluntary and paid work opportunities. We will demonstrate all this through close monitoring and evaluation of those using our project.

There is a risk that the project could be cancelled if sufficient funding is not found. We are confident we can raise the necessary funds through the Big Give, but If we are not successful, we will postpone the production while we attempt to raise funds from other sources.

Our website will be updated regularly with news of the production. Donors will receive personal emails also updating them of developments with the project. Donors will be invited to attend rehearsals and will be given free tickets to see the performances resulting from these

  • Background

Workshops and rehearsals will take place in the inner city of Bristol, an area acknowledged to have a high level of social deprivation, poverty, unemployment, crime, poor social housing, and other problems.

Long term users of mental health services living in the inner cities will be the main beneficiaries. These are among the most marginalised and disadvantaged individuals in their communities. They will typically be unemployed, in long term receipt of Incapacity or Sickness benefit, have poor educational achievement, with little or no training or work experience and little prospect of finding work.
