  • Need

Many homes in the township are child headed, makes these children extremely vulnerable, to physical and mental abuse. They often go to bed hungry and there is very little access to health, rights, education and enterprise creating a cycle of poverty that is handed down from generation to generation.

Training, caring and providing all levels of support with many opportunities to teach a community to take care of their own. Reduce the number of child headed households and teen pregnancies, reduce stigma, provide childhood illness awareness materials, early years teacher training, shack safety and opportunities to improve liveihoods to allow the children to grown into healthy productive adults for themselves and their families in the future.

  • Background

The project is located in the shack township of Munsieville, approx 40 mins from Johannesburg, South Africa. It is believed that Munsieville is one of the oldest shack communities in SA. Many of the households are child headed. Children often go to bed hungry, in unsafe conditions, with very little sanitation and access to clean water.

There are approximately 10,400 orphan & vulnerable children who will directrly benefit from this project. It is difficult to know the exact number as many of them are not registered for fear of being deported. The township has no wealth assets other than a few village savings & loan clubs that have been set up and some vegetable gardens to nutritional food for the children.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Project HOPE UK has been working in Munsieville for the past 5 yrs, and have gained the support of the community. Have set up 7 hubs managed by trained local community volunteers. We have held the festival for 3 years in December, bringing the community together to support the children. This festival will give the children a voice and will show what they need and the Hub committees will be encouraged to impliment those ideas/needs.
