Weekly Drop In

Monday evening is our weekly drop in session. Between 4 and 7pm we provide a place for people with mental health problems to meet and take part in activities. We also serve a hot meal, pudding and tea or coffee.

  • Need

The purpose of the drop is to provide a safe and welcoming place for those people isolated by mental health issues.

The Monday Drop-In at St Barnabas Church Epsom started in 2006 and is still growing. Some 30-40 people attend each week

Everyone is welcome at our Drop In, especially those isolated by mental health difficulties.
The Drop-In is supported by volunteers who ensure that there are always hot ans cold refreshments and home-made meals.

The atmosphere is informal and welcoming and it is a good place to meet others. Drop-In members decide the programme of activities and have a strong sense of belonging and ownership.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Our main aim is to break down stigma and inspire understanding about mental health

» We will ensure we provide a regular weekly drop and Organise our annual Epsom Mental Health Week in October.

    What success will look like

We encourage everyone to express their thoughts, fears and ideas, as we believe it will help a persons wellbeing, feeling included and their opinion has been heard.

  • Impact

We hope to enable people to not feel so afraid of speaking about mental health issues and to give them a platform to do this in.

We will challenge stigma where ever it occurs and give advice and support to those in our community

The main risk for our project is that the number of people needing help within our community could increase and we may not have the resources to currently deal with this growth.

On the other side this may be seen as an opportunity to expand what we do and provide new activties such as a self help depression group we are starting in April 2014.

We would report to donors on a quarterly and annual basis and would agree with them what information would be required.

  • Background

Our projects are run in Epsom, Surrey. Epsom has a long standing connection with mental health and in the early 1900's we have five psychiatric hospitals and they were at the forefront of psychiatric medicine. This link had a long term effect on our community with a high number of the population working at the hospitals and following change sin the 1900's a gradual closure of the hospital put more patients in the community.

We feel that the following groups will benefit from our projects

    1. individuals with mental health issues
    2. family members of people with mental health issues
    2. Professionals (GP's, psychiatrist and psychologists)
    3. Volunteers
    4. Board of trustees
    5. the wider local community
