Alcohol Research UK Research Studentship Scheme
There is little postgraduate studentship funding available and young people in particular find resourcing their studies very challenging. Alcohol Research UK can only afford to match-funds 3 PhD's a year and we would like to increase that to four, hence our appeal.
An annual initiative
Charity information: Alcohol Research Uk
Universities have limited resources to offer PhD funding. Alcohol Research UK match funds around three PhD studentships a year and we provide an added network for the student to access.
The purpose of the scheme is to encourage research in the alcohol field and to improve the quality of service provided for those with drinking problems.
This year, Alcohol Research UK is collaborating with the following universities to co-fund innovative doctoral research:
Middlesex University, to investigate the role of stakeholders in local decision making;
Southampton University, to explore the experiences and recovery needs of alcohol dependent patients following detoxification programmes; and
Edge Hill University, to research how groups regulate, shape and maintain alcohol behaviours.
To encourage new researchers in the alcohol field.
Activities» Provide and increase co-funding for PhD Studentships
What success will look like
PhD students will hopefully further their research in the alcohol field, disseminate that research and inspire the next generation of researchers.
To encourage and disseminate research in the alcohol field.
Activities» By inspiring and supporting new researchers.
What success will look like
By supporting new and innovative research. Alcohol Research UK also funds post-graduate symposia, holds an annual conference and our website is a great research resource tool.
The more research we can fund and disseminate, the more researchers we can encourage and inspire, the better the understanding of alcohol related harm in society.
The forums and events Alcohol Research UK hold (and support) not only explore contemporary concerns around alcohol but can look back, reflect and take a historical perspective.
There is always the risk that due to unforseen circumstances, students may not complete their studies. This does not happen very often but it does occasionally. We hope they will have gained from the work they completed.
Donors would be given an annual report on the studentships, which would include information on how the student and their research is progressing, as well as news about Alcohol Research UK.

Amount Heading Description £21,000 Research Studentship Scheme to co-fund a student - £7,000 per year for 3 years.
Alcohol Research UK only funds projects and people in the UK. The Research Studentship Scheme is an annual competition. Universities anywhere in the UK may apply for the co-funding. Students then apply to the successful universities for those studentships.
Students; universities (their postgraduate funding will go further when matched with ours); the research community; policy makers (who will have more research to draw upon); and the alcohol treatment field (whose practices are influenced by the latest thinking).
Alcohol Research UK is an independent charity that tackles alcohol-related harm by funding high quality, impartial research.
Students we have supported in the past have gone on to research work that changes peoples lives, for example in the areas of strengthening families and community interventions.
