CHAT's Big Sleep-Out

Sleep-outside in a tent, barn or churchyard, sofa-surf at a friend's house or send teddy to school to sleep there for one night. On Friday 26 June 2015, groups across Mid Devon will pull together to raise money for homelessness-prevention in our area by joining in with CHAT's 4th Big Sleep-Out.

June 2015 - August 2015

  • Need

With most of our statutory funding cut, CHAT needs to raise £45,000 extra per year to keep our tenancy support service viable long-term. This service provides a life-line to people at risk of losing their tenancies and has turned round many lives in Mid Devon. With need increasing, we want to expand our outreach and bring hope to those who need it.

CHAT's tenancy support team offers a free outreach service to help people move on with their lives. We provide specialist and general advice and can support clients in their own homes for up to a year. We also have an appointments system for tenants with less complex problems. Ways we support include helping with benefit applications, support and advice at meetings, debt-management, dealing with landlords and help with managing anxieties and addictions.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Raise awareness of homelessness throughout Mid Devon

» Engage local community groups in our Big Sleep-Out

Through the participation of local groups and individuals. Inviting the town mayor and other councillors to be involved, and asking the press to cover the event.

    Aim 2

Help people empathise with rough-sleepers, and those experiencing other kinds of homelessness

» Invite people to sleep-out for the night on 26 June 2015 at an organised venue, or you could sleep on a friend's sofa or camp in your garden.

Asking people for their comments afterwards. Groups want to take part the following year.

    Aim 3

    Raise money for CHAT

» Participants get sponsored to sleep outside, sofa-surf or camp for the night. Teddies 'sleep' at school for a fixed, small amount.

Encouraging as many sponsors to come forward as possible. Giving via the internet will help with this.

  • Impact

More local people, especially young people, being aware of the issues surrounding the housing situation in Mid Devon. More people becoming aware of how they can be helped. Those at risk of losing their tenancies being able to maintain them. Even more support from the local community.

Accidents at sleep-outs. We have a comprehensive Organisers' pack which includes risk assessment information and advice on how to plan a sleep-out. We invite the police to drop in at the larger events and we make sure that the areas are patrolled.

We contact each of the organisers to tell them how the sleep-out went. We will use our Facebook page for feedback. We invite the local press along.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are the only homelessness prevention charity based in Mid Devon. The sleep-out fits well with the work we do. Stautory services are increasingly unable to cover all the local needs, or give the time to people at risk of losing tenancies.

 Great Support. Lovely workers. I benefitted a lot from meeting with CHAT right from the start.
