Opera Tour and Children's Workshops

Between March and June 2015, we plan to tour in East Lincolnshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Telford & Wrekin and London Newham, and undertake 20 primary school workshops, reaching new audiences with our accessible and fun new opera Baroque Around the Block.

    Need

    We want to reach as many children, young people and their families as possible with this fun 'Horrible Histories' style opera, which describes the extraordinary life stories and characters of some of our most famous Baroque composers. There are few opportunities for children between the ages of 8 and 11 to participate in free performing arts activities, which have proven personal and learning benefits, and with us they will create their very own miniature opera in 1 day!

    Solution

    We decided therefore to deliver a participatory workshop programme to more than 1200 children in 20 primary schools, engaging them in creating and performing their very own specially written opera scenes, with members of the cast from the main show and a miniature set. This would run alongside our main opera production, touring to new areas of the UK unfamiliar with our work, which itself would reach more than 3,000 young people and their families, friends and teachers.

    To reach children with limited or no opportunity to access participatory performing arts.

    Activities

    » To deliver participatory opera creation workshops in primary schools and offer them access to the main show at a subsidised rate.

    Reaching 1200 children from 20 different community schools, and demonstrate changes in their learning and communication skills as a result of our workshops.

    To reach new audiences for our work and educational activities.

    » To perform in different venues new to us in 5 areas of England and deliver participatory workshops in primary schools unfamiliar with our work.

    Achieving our target of 3,000 young people, their families and teachers attending our show.

    To reach a new audience unfamiliar with classical music.

    » To target individuals who engage infrequently in arts activities, through utilising a variety of deals to make our show more accessible to them.

    Reaching new audiences who do not normally attend classical music events, such as the elderly, non traditional classical music goers, and others.


  • Impact

    Impact

    We anticipate the wider impact of our project will be increased: 1) Access of our work by a more diverse demographic; 2) Development of social bonds with local areas unfamiliar with our work; 3) Development of audience base for fund-raising potential and our sustainability as a charitable organisation; 4) Children's musical and life skills; 5) Engagement with schools. We shall demonstrate this through an evaluation took kit which measures organisation value and social return on investment

    Risk

    Getting schools with little or no engagement with the arts to work with us is a key risk to our project. Therefore we shall work closely with local music and performing arts hubs and our tour venues to broker relationships, which we shall develop further with direct contact.
    Securing the total funding is also another key risk, and the number of children we engage with may be reduced. A strong marketing and fund-raising campaign will be planned to minimise this risk.

    Reporting

    Regular social media briefings and updates will be posted as the project progresses, with feedback from those participating in the workshops and our artists and crew, through evaluation and professional development reports which will be completed by all these stakeholders.

  • Background

    Location

    We shall be touring the main show and undertaking the participatory opera creation workshops in The Wirral, West Sussex, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Kent, Somerset, Staffordshire, Berkshire, Northumberland, Cumbria, Lincolnshire and Surrey, in the towns of Malvern, Llandudno, New Brighton, Horsham, Camberley, Shrewsbury, Croydon, Canterbury, Crawley, Dartford, Weston Super Mare, Lichfield, Skegness, Windsor and Hexham.

    Beneficiaries

    Workshop participants: Up to 540 children between the ages of 8 and 11, across forms and yearly cohorts will benefit directly from participating in the workshops, and performing a mini opera of their own creation. Many will be from very deprived families in their communities, and have little if any experience of performing arts.
    Audiences of School performances: Families and teachers of the workshop participants will benefit from the school performances and subsidised access to the main show.

    Since 2004 we have been experimenting with ways to bring Baroque music to new audiences, increasing accessibility and engagement, by using innovative theatrical presentations within our opera and concert productions, and the skills of specialist contemporary directors. In tandem with our performance programme, we have built up a participatory music and drama outreach strand which engages 10,000 young people annually and delivers proven outcomes.
