Portuguese Community Project in Stockwell
Working to improve the confidence and skills of the Portuguese community in the Stockwell area. Helping the Portuguese community - especially those most in need - to play a stronger role in the local community. Plus a bilingual independent advice service for welfare benefits.
July 2013 - July 2016
The Portuguese Needs Assessment highlighted that the Portuguese community in Lambeth suffers disproportionate levels of deprivation. 53% of respondents were unemployed, 49% rated their English as poor, and 41% found it difficult to access services because of their English. This language barrier (with frequent illiteracy) often leads to reduced take up of services and increased isolation, which in turn create a spiral of decline often resulting in mental heal.
We support the diverse Portuguese-speaking community to develop skills, form groups to undertake recreational and community projects, and strengthen the Portuguese voice within the wider community. We assist clients to build the skills and confidence they need to get jobs, and help them to claim welfare benefits to which they are entitled, but which they often miss out on due to language and other barriers.
Providing support for the Portuguese-speaking community members living in Lambeth
Activities» Supporting clients through the introduction of the universal credit system, and the changes to working tax credits
» Supporting clients with mental health needs – potentially through a self-help group supported by volunteers
» Building links with the increasing number of Vauxhall developers and employers, and supporting our clients through improved English and others skills
» Exploring partnerships with Lambeth Council and social housing providers to improve the quality and sustainability of the jobs that our clients get
We will make a baseline assessment of each client to ascertain their needs and identify equalities information about them.
By the end of the project:
-870 Portuguese-speaking people will have improved their financial independence
-45 Portuguese-speaking people will have participated in wider community events, projects and activities (incl. the Stockwell Forum)
-15 Portuguese-speaking peer advocates volunteering regularly on local community projects, including on our own service
-150 Portuguese-speaking people report an improved sense of well-being and an improved sense of connection with their local community
Failure to recruit clients: Over the last 3 years we have had high demand as a free service. If we do not meet our targets our volunteers will increase outreach and distribute more fliers in the local area.
Failure to get target clients into sustainable jobs: We will aim to manage this risk by building relationships with employers operating in the Vauxhall regeneration area with the aim of increasing both the numbers of people getting jobs and the quality of those job
All beneficiaries will be asked to evaluate the impact of our interventions on their lives. At the end of the project we will appoint an external evaluator to assess its impact. The final report about the project and its outcomes will be available at Stockwell Partnership's website.

Stockwell (known locally as 'Little Portugal') is a major hub for Portuguese speakers. The area has a wide variety of Portuguese bars, cafes and other businesses. Portuguese Speakers represent approximately one-sixth of the Lambeth highly diverse community.
Thanks to the project, members of the large Portuguese community in Stockwell will build the skills and confidence to find work, access services and benefits, and to take part in wider community initiatives. It will build the capacity of volunteers to help themselves and to help others. The volunteers will build links and become ‘animateurs’ for cohesion within the wider community.
Stockwell Partnership is a charity run by local people for local people from Stockwell. We are one of the most long lived organisations working in the area. Our building is located within the heart of ‘Little Portugal’. We have a strong track record of delivering a free service to Portuguese people in need.
