Garden project to empower orphans with aspirations

In partnership with Robert Sinyoka Primary School of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, where we sponsor 9 orphans, we wish to create a sustainable gardening project within the existing underutilized school land and address the current situation.
The overall aim being to eradicate poverty and promote education.

  • Need


    Zimbabwe has the 5th highest HIV prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa at 15%. with 1.4 million people living with it including 170,000 children, equating to 4% of the global total (http://www.avert.org/professionals/hiv-around-world/sub-saharan-africa/zimbabwe)

    The current economic situation has resulted in limited capacity for social support. Some orphans are living in granny-headed households without means to buy school necessities and paying fees, hence the existing poverty cycle within families


    Building on the existing 3 years relationship between the4Cs UK based charity and Robert Sinyoka School of Zimbabwe, we will share knowledge and together come up with solutions on how to fully utilize the existing school land and create a sustainable garden project, which will eventually generate income and support the orphans and their families, hence ending the reliance of hand-outs and the poverty cycle.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Ensure that both boys and girls orphans will be able to complete at least their primary education.


    » To ensure that there are no barriers to attending school by providing necessary materials such as school stationery, uniforms and paying school fees.
    » By monitoring the progress of each child to ensure that they are attending school and achieving the necessary expected school grades

    What success will look like

    The children complete their primary education with good grades and then have opportunities for future education - either through secondary school or vocational training

    To ensure that participates appreciate nature and are skilled with sustainable development ideas.


    » Involve participants in all project management stages and together create a sustainable income generating garden project within the school premises.

    What success will look like

    Self sustaining garden project created within the school premises using local organic materials and upcycling local resources. The project to generate income for sponsored orphans

  • Impact


    Literacy rate of 15 to 24 year olds, both male and female will improve. This in turn will encourage completion of secondary education by the participants and this trend should lead to greater prospects of employment - hence reducing unemployment statistics and ending the poverty cycle within the orphan's environment.


    The key risk is on the4Cs UK based charity failing to raise sufficient funds to start, monitor and complete the garden project.
    All stakeholders involved are aware of this risk and the4Cs is committed in undertaking their own income generating activities to raise enough funds from the general public and are continually researching new streams of funding.


    We will report back to our individual donors via regular newsletters and we are very happy to communicate via telephone or email at any time.
    We will prepare more detailed annual updates for charitable trusts and foundations, as well as our major donors.

  • Background


    Partnership project between UK based charity called 'the4Cs' and Robert Sinyoka Primary School based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

    Robert Sinyoka is a peri-urban settlement which is neglected, almost forgotten and without electricity. A stone throw away from Old Pumula, Bulawayo, it can easily be mistaken for a rural area with dilapidated pole and dagga huts, no clinic, no shops and no electricity.

    More than 70 years after it was first built, residents still rely on communal taps.


    The main beneficiaries of the project are the 9 orphans and vulnerable children who have been identified by the community leaders and school management, as desperately in need of external support in order to complete their primary and possible secondary education.

    The whole community will also benefit as the project outcomes will be disseminated through out - residents will learn how to utilize their land and make it self sustainable.

    the4Cs runs a successful garden project in UK.

    The majority of charity’s trustees have previously lived and/or worked in Zimbabwe, hence familiar with conditions.

    Our partnership working with the school underpins our governance structure and ensures that expenditure is monitored at grass roots level.

    The costs of the charity’s operation in the UK are met by the trustees themselves meaning 100% of any money raised from the general public goes directly to the project.
