  • Need

    Need

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust agrees that TB in cattle is an awful and devastating disease which blights the livelihoods and lives of farmers – and we need to solve the problem. However, based on the scientific evidence, the Trust does not agree that shooting badgers will be effective in controlling bovine TB and it could make the problem even worse. The Trust believes that vaccination offers the best and most sensible approach to controlling the spread of TB.

    Solution

Vaccination is a positive way that we can help beat this dreadful disease and show support for our farmers.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Vaccination of badgers to prevent the spread of TB across the county

    Activities

» Vaccinate badgers on Warwickshire Wildlife Trust reserves

Successful pre-baiting, trapping and vaccination of badgers

  • Impact

    Impact

We believe that vaccination offers the best and most sensible approach to controlling the spread of TB - combined with better biosecurity, increased movement restrictions and more reliable testing. We don’t want to see either badgers or cattle slaughtered unnecessarily – and vaccination is really the only way we’re going to find a proper way out of this problem.

    Risk

Failure to trap badgers - this has been addressed by pre-baiting the traps with peanuts.

Failure to attract sufficient funding - this has been addressed by seeking funding from several different sources.

    Reporting

Regular press releases are issued to local media and placed on our website. Regular updates are also included in communications with our members. Donors are encouraged to sign up to our e-bulletin to receive all the latest news from the Trust.
