Sport in the Park
Four days in Battersea Park to try a variety of sports and more daring activities such as high ropes, a climbing wall as well as arts & crafts and music. Various agencies give advice and information in a fun and entertaining way which includes school nurses, police, fire brigade and Network Rail.
One week in the summer
Charity information: Battersea Summer Scheme
Battersea Summer Scheme primarily operates during the school summer holidays when many young have no activities or opportunities to keep them occupied. They often have absent parents and the street becomes their playground which is where many problems arise. Boredom and poverty are a dangerous combination. and with a lack of positive direction many of the young turn to crime or become victims of crime. Gang culture is high in the borough and cultural and locality issues create many problems.
We target the unprivileged young in the borough aged between 8 and 16 although the event is open to all. Some 2,000 young people attend with either their families or youth groups. It is an event anticipated by many as there is little else to do which is affordable during the school holidays. They have opportunities to try many different sporting and challenging activities and they are not just hanging around on the streets where trouble is waiting for them. We give them a fun and active day out.
To encourage young people to try a range of new sports in an entertaining and fun environment.
Activities» To run the event in Battersea Park providing stimulating and exciting activities alongside sports coaching, arts & Crafts and music
What success will look like
We sell wristbands at £1 each enabling them to take part in all the activities but also enabling us to gage attendance. Feedback is taken from the attendees and club leaders.
Our main achievements have been get the young to engage in a new sport or activity and then join a relevant local club to carry it on. Student sports coaches from local colleges and clubs get their work experience hours by helping us. Accompanied young offenders come and help with tasks such as face painting as part of their community hours. Over and above anything else these are activities to keep the young occupied and off the streets and away from the risks of being involved in crime.
The weather can have a very adverse effect on the project. Many of the activities take place in a marquee but attendance is usually dramatically reduced if it is raining which we can do little about. Historically we have not been badly effected by bad weather.
We produce an annual report which is distributed to all donors. We are active on Facebook and Twitter and our website contains reports and photographs of all our events and activities.

First established in 2000 Battersea Summer Scheme’s Sport in the Park started as a ‘family day’ and has now become our flag ship event. For four days at the beginning of the summer holidays we hire the Millennium Arena and adjacent field in Battersea Park and organise a variety of sports run by professional sports coaches. Alongside this are adventurous activities, music, drama, dance and arts & crafts. It is an outdoor event with many activities taking part in marquees.
Some 2,000 young people attend with either their families or youth groups. The age group for this event is 8 -16 years old and is open to all in Wandsworth. We target the local schools, youth groups, advertise in the local estates, council facilities and libraries as well as other forms of social media. This area suffers from unemployment, overcrowding and households lacking in amenities and are some of the worst in the country.
First established in 2000 Battersea Summer Scheme’s Sport in the Park started as a ‘family day’ and has now become our flag ship event. Year on year we have expanded this event and it is eagerly anticipated each year by many in the borough.
