Summer Away Days
To organise activities for local disadvantaged young people who come from areas suffering severe deprivation and at risk children in Wandsworth. These trips take them out of inner London to gain new and different experiences and help them learn to integrate with their peers, leaders and community.
Charity information: Battersea Summer Scheme
Battersea Summer Scheme primarily operates during the school summer holidays when many young have no activities or opportunities to keep them occupied. They often have absent parents and the street becomes their playground which is where many problems arise. Boredom and poverty are a dangerous combination. and with a lack of positive direction many of the young turn to crime or become victims of crime. Gang culture is high in the borough and cultural and locality issues create many problems.
Our aim is to encourage local young people to take part in positive activities, to have an adventure instead of loitering around with nothing to do. These young people can be very vulnerable and easily become victims of crime or, worse still, be tempted to commit a crime. We try to reach them before this happens. We organise these day trips to various exciting venues across the South East to help keep them occupied and so out of trouble.
To keep young people occupied and out of trouble during the long school summer holidays.
Activities» Arrange a variety of day trips to a range of fun and exciting venues
What success will look like
Our partnership with the police and council bodies report and discuss the benefits of taking theses vulnerable young people out of the city
We aim to give these young people opportunities not usually available to them so broadening their horizons. They learn to respect their own surroundings and integerate better with both their peers and leaders. Regular reports from youth group leaders demonstrate the importance of these outings.
There are numerous risks involved taking young people out of their home environment but this is part of the challenge of these away days. Other risks such as travelling by coach or train and activities at the venues themselves are all risk assessed.
We produce an annual report which is distributed to all our donors. We are active on Facebook and Twitter and our website has full reports and photographs of all our activities

Most outings are to exciting outdoor adventure sites where, apart from getting dirty and exhausted, they are designed to develop an skills such as initiative, leadership, creativity and time management. The competitive element and teamwork is of immediate benefit, now and in the future. The groups also go to theme parks usually as a reward for completing an in-club course - always popular and well deserved. Other outings are as simple as fruit picking or a trip to the seaside – a first for some!
Our trips are aimed the underprivileged young people in Battersea and Balham aged 8 to 18. These are areas suffering from severe deprivation within the worst 5% of need in the country, with the worst statistics for health, educational achievement, crime (particularly relating to drug use and abuse) and ‘at risk’ children in the borough. There is high unemployment, overcrowding and households lacking in amenities with many non functioning families.
We have been running events and activities in the borough since 1992 and work closely with the police and youth services to deliver these activities. We are experienced in the delivery of the summer away days.
