Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice Capital Appeal

For 22 years we have been providing specialist palliative and respite care for people living with incurable illness at Thorpe Hall, a Grade 1 listed building. However the building is no longer fit for purpose - a new Thorpe Hall will enable us to provide a community hospice service for the region

  • Need


    Thorpe Hall Hospice currently provides in-patient facilities to around 300 people a year and more than 100 people a year use the day centre. However, the building is not currently fit for purpose due to:
    • Patient rooms are currently shared
    • Bathrooms are currently shared
    • The building is expensive to heat, light and maintain
    • It does not comply with the latest Care Quality Commission guidance
    • Modification is not cost-effective or possible due to Grade 1 listed building status


    We aim to build a new modern hospice to sit beside and complement the existing building, which will allow us to both increase our capacity and care better for the 500 or so patients who will spend time with us each year.
    The new hospice will have:
    • 20 private en-suite bedrooms with access onto the garden
    • A living room for family counselling and a play area for children
    • An expanded day hospice
    • The Sanctuary: a multi-faith centre for spiritual support
    • An education centre

    Aim 1

    500 people a year receive end of life care in a comfortable, safe environment of their choice


    » By installing a new digital CCTV system to improve security and safety within the hospice.
    » By installing new secondary glazing and heating to ensure that the whole building is warm, cosy, draft free, creating a warm, welcoming environment.
    » By having a warm colour scheme; clean and hygienic flooring; new lighting and heating to create a warm, inviting, clean, well lit environment.

    What success will look like

    Success will be providing end of life care for 500 people a year in the place of their choice.

    Thorpe Hall Hospice is more able to meet the needs of people with multiple complex needs


    » By creating a new palliative day care centre with private consulting rooms, therapy, treatment, activities and bereavement counselling rooms.

    What success will look like

    Success will be increasing the number and variety of treatments we can offer to meet the needs of people with complex conditions.

    Aim 3

    Encouraging Independence and Increasing the Therapeutic Value of Garden Areas


    » By fitting motion sensors to doors to ensure that all users, regardless of strength and mobility, can enter and exit the building safely and easily.
    » By fitting patio doors to the patient bedrooms to enable them to easily access the garden area, which is a beautiful and peaceful outside space.

    What success will look like

    Success will mean that patients are able to maintain their independence for as long as possible and have access to outside space.

    Thorpe Hall Hospice is more responsive to the needs of all people using it


    » By having a main reception that is warm, welcoming, and approachable and assists visitors to find the person or location they are seeking.
    » By providing private spaces and rooms for quiet, confidential and personal conversations.
    » By providing a space that has a suitable range of information and literature relevant to patient and visitor needs and facilities for staff training.
    » By providing a wireless internet access point for visitors and patients to enable them to access the internet and communicate with friends and family.

    What success will look like

    Success will mean that the hospice meets the needs of the local community and allows us to increase capacity and services, improve standards of care, and provide training.

    Aim 5

    Improved Privacy and Promoting Dignity for patients and their families


    » By providing 20 single patient bedrooms with an en-suite bathroom, that offer both patients and their families and visitors privacy and dignity
    » By providing a Sanctuary space and multi-faith centre for private and/or spiritual reflection.
    » By creating a new office for bereavement counsellors and private, comfortable meeting space for bereavement counselling.

    What success will look like

    Success will mean that patients can spend time with their loved ones in privacy and can maintain their dignity, rather than having to share facilities.

  • Impact


    The new Thorpe Hall will be a centre of excellence in palliative care enabling us to increase our capacity, and improve standards of care for the 500 patients who will spend time with us each year. We will demonstrate success by monitoring patient numbers and reporting on their experience of their care. We will provide training to staff and visiting health professionals so that palliative care becomes more integrated in the wider medical community, monitoring the number of professionals trained.


    • Total funds not raised by March 2015: Risk is monitored through monthly reporting to the Capital Appeal board;
    • Changes to hospice design: Risk is managed by a process whereby all drawings and specifications are signed off before advancing to the next design or construction stage;
    • Changes in NHS Structure, financial contributions and health and social care policy: Risk is managed by maintaining positive relationships with Commissioners and through the work of our Policy and Campaign Team


    Donors, who sign up to receive communication, will receive a monthly email report on the progress of project detailing on going and forthcoming activities Thorpe Hall Hospice has its own dedicated website at, which is updated regularly with progress of the appeal.

    Although Thorpe Hall Hospice is set in beautiful grounds on the outskirts of Peterborough, it supports and cares for people across the region including those from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Norfolk. Currently there are over 75,000 people living with an incurable illness within the local area of Thorpe Hall Hospice, with 13,000 of these people in Peterborough alone.


    500 people aged 18 and over who are living with an incurable illness a year and their families will benefit from the project.
