Children in Barrio Bosco II

Teaching children from 5 to 13 years to read and write as they are from families living in very precarious conditions and spend their days helping their parents to gather discarded cardboard for recycling to bring in an income. Due to malnutrition they also suffer from high blood pressure!

March 2013 - June 2017

  • Need

Lack of education as well as health problems due to inadequate nourishment. Many suffer from high blood pressure!

Educating as well as improving health standards of these children who are living in such poor conditions in an effort to help them attain a better life with better prospects.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Education - teaching reading and writing.

» Weekly gatherings of some 50 children in a hall where they are taught simple exercises in writing and arithmetic by professional teachers.

    What success will look like

The excitement of the children is clearly visible when they are able to write their names and even more as well as being able to do sums and simple arithmetical exercises.

    Aim 2

Health - physical monitoring, especially blood pressure levels.

» This is carried out at the same time and venue where the children receive their lessons in education. They are also provided with food.

    What success will look like

Regular health monitoring carried out by a qualified nurse and records kept of each child to check improvements.

  • Impact

It is hoped these children will gain sufficient knowledge and confidence to be able to attend a standard school where they will receive a fuller education and thus prepare them for life ahead. We also hope to see their health improve by having a proper food diet as they grow from childhood to teenagers.

The main risks are the lack of funds to maintain the project and of course, children losing an interest in what is being done for their benefit. But it is hoped that the work of the project will be sufficiently interesting to keep the attention and the interest of the children. Likewise, if their health improves then they will have greater ability to endure, perform and enjoy a better life.

Interested donors would be kept informed by regular reports of the progress made with the children concerned in this project.

  • Background

The project is based in the province of Santiago del Estero, Northern Argentina where The Esperanza Trust (Argentina) has the focus of its work in helping people of all ages living in conditions which are far from being acceptable, i.e. extreme poverty.

It is the children of poor families who will benefit and hopefully will go on to live more normal and successful lives.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Our charity was started 17 years ago and we are a purely voluntary organisation seeking to help the very needy in that northern province of Argentina. We are registered with the Charity Commission and are proud to report that often more than 90% of the funds we raise go to the various projects in which we are involved.
