Counselling and Suicide Prevention

Each year we provide 1000+ counselling sessions to lesbian, gay & bisexual people suffering from a range of mental health issues.

Over 55% of people using our service have previously made at least 1 attempt at suicide. 98% show improvement in their mental health with a 100% satisfaction rating

  • Need

In our extensive LGB community research project entitled 'I Exist' a high level of need regarding mental health & well-being was discovered. 42% had had suicidal thoughts, 73% suffered from low self esteem or lack of confidence, 55% suffered from depression and 60% had anxiety attacks. All of these can then lead to more serious mental health conditions if not dealt with. Many self medicate using drugs & alcohol causing even more issues down the line.

The project will provide face to face counselling at the times people need to work through their difficulties. The project will provide trained counsellers, usually for 12 sessions and also therapy groups which have the added bonus of providing peer mentoring for those at a different stage in their journey. The helpline available 10am to 10pm provides instant access to information, advice and support 7 days a week.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To improve mental health and wellbeing of LGB people to prevent suicide attempts and depression

» Face to face counselling with trained counsellors in a safe environment
» Group therapy work providing support from a professional and also peer support
» Help-line 10am to 10pm every day of the week

    What success will look like

Each person receiving counselling services will go through an informal exit chat along side their formalized exit to evaluate their progress from when they started 12 weeks prior

  • Impact

LGF uses a 4 pronged system to help measure outcomes for individuals which ask service users have they felt overwhelmed since their treatments, have they had any feelings of hopelessness, have they felt able to cope when things go wrong and have they thought about hurting themselves. We will look at how clients have reported an increase in skills, confidence and self esteem.

Success will be LGF being able to assist an increased number of LGB people and a reduction in suicide attempts.

Demand for services could be too high and their could be a lack of resources to provide the counselling at the time it is needed due to lack of staff.

This will be resolved by ongoing training and up-skilling of staff and volunteers, regular reviews of waiting times for clients and thorough evaluation of the project with the service users themselves to ensure a quality service is available.

Our website is a hub of advice and information but it also has sections where more detailed reports are available to donors as to the weekly and annual successes within our projects. We provide as many case studies as possible so that donors can hear of successes direct from the people we help.
