Classical Opera's 2014 Programme

In 2014, Classical Opera's programme of performances, recordings, and our unrivalled work with young opera talent will include Mozart's final masterpiece, La clemenza di Tito at Cadogan Hall, and Il re Pastore in the recording studio, as well as a new project for our superb young artists.

  • Need


    Mozart is arguably the most famous composer of all time, and opera his most important genre. Many of his operas are rarely performed and little known despite their astonishing beauty and accomplishment. There are few recordings or performances of Mozart’s less famous works, and there is a real need to accessibly bring this music to wide audiences, and support new and emerging operatic talent.


    Performances and our recording in 2014 will bring the music of Mozart and his contemporaries to the widest possible audience, championing and illuminating rarely performed works both in the concert hall and recording studio. The company has an unrivalled reputation for nurturing and supporting young opera talent, and our Associate Artist programme and dedicated Young Artist project will offer prestigious training and professional performance opportunities to the most talented emerging artists.

    To offer world-class young artists extensive training and prestigious performing opportunities.


    » Regular coaching, mentoring and supervision from Artistic Director Ian Page, and a bursary to assist with ongoing study and research.
    » High quality professional performance and recording opportunities alongside established and high profile artists.
    » Extensive rehearsal periods, offering the opportunity to develop a thoroughly detailed approach to the craft and advice on roles and repertoire.
    » A dedicated Young Artist performance project and industry showcase at a prestigious London venue in June 2014.

    What success will look like

    Young artists who have trained with the company have gone on to work with the ROH, Glyndebourne, Garsington, ENO to name but a few, and have quickly become major operatic names.

    Aim 2

    To bring Mozart's little-performed final masterpiece, La clemenza di Tito, to a wide audience.


    » A performance of La clemenza di Tito at Cadogan Hall with Andrew Kennedy, Darren Jeffery, Sarah-Jane Brandon, Emilie Renard and Helen Sherman.
    » Outreach activities to engage audiences and young people with the opera, including talks, online content and special events.

    What success will look like

    Previous concerts at Cadogan Hall and Wigmore Hall have attracted large and received critical acclaim. Audience engagement outside the concert hall will also demonstrate success.

    Aim 3

    To continue our complete Mozart opera recording cycle with a recording of Il re pastore.


    » Producing a quality recording of this repertoire with Signum Records, enhanced by video and an extensive booklet and notes.
    » Engaging world-class artists, many of whom have worked extensively with the company since the start of their careers.

    Our previous recordings and performances have attracted outstanding reviews and we would hope to receive similar acclaim for this project.

  • Impact


    Mozart’s reputation as arguably the greatest opera composer still rests on only a third of his operas. Our work will offer audiences a fresh perspective and intensive overview of his complete canon, and provide a permanent record which can inspire current and future generations.


    The main risk is that we do not secure sufficient funding to bring the projects to fruition, but we are confident in our comprehensive fundraising campaign for each element of the programme. We have strict financial governance to ensure that we don’t make firm commitments that we cannot honour.


    Funders of our projects receive regular progress reports, and we involve many donors closely with our work, for example, inviting them to attend rehearsals, meet artists, attend pre-performance talks, etc. We also organise private events around many of our projects.

    Classical Opera's performances will take place in London venues including Wigmore Hall and Cadogan Hall. Our recordings are released internationally.
