Charity information: Battersea Summer Scheme
Battersea Summer Scheme primarily operates during the school summer holidays when many young have no activities or opportunities to keep them occupied. They often have absent parents and the street becomes their playground which is where many problems arise. Boredom and poverty are a dangerous combination. and with a lack of positive direction many of the young turn to crime or become victims of crime. Gang culture is high in the borough and cultural and locality issues create many problems.
The course will promote and teach inter-dependence and teamwork leading to an increase in self confidence and self esteem. It will introduce the young people to an unfamiliar environment and promote the integration of young people from rival areas. They will learn to approach new challenges with a positive outlook and will foster the ability to develop and sustain effective relationships with people that they normally would not. It encourages them to try and take up new activities
To challenge young people's perception of their environment and their community.
Activities» To take young people to demanding rural environments to learn new and challenging skills and relationships
What success will look like
Reports before and after demonstrate the pre-conceptions the young have about themselves, their peers and their community. Their post course reports show a more balanced response.

These are life changing skills.
Engaging the young people to attend the course in the first place is difficult and some to fall out at the last minute often due to family pressures which cannot be avoided. Those who have attended a course before often help mentor and encourage new students to attend.
We produce an annual newsletter which is distributed to all our donors with a full report on all our activites run during the year. Our website also contains information and photographs.

Various challenging rural locations are selected around the coutry dependent on the size and make up of the group. Locations have included Bewl Water in East Sussex for a water based residential, North Wales (Snowdonia), Cuckmere National Park etc. The groups research and suggest venues which are visited and agreed on between us.
11 to 18 year old underprivileged young people coming from the poorer and more deprived areas of Battersea and Balham.
We have been successfully running these residential courses since 2004 and so have the experience to organise and deliver them. As a charity we have worked in the borough since 1992 so are well known within the borough and we work closely with all types of local youth clubs and groups, Wandsworth Borough Council youth services and the Metropolitan Police to achieve our aims.
