  • Need

The Dialogue Society has grassroots experience of key barriers to positive intercultural engagement in UK society:
    - Minority groups sometimes become somewhat insular and isolated because they lack the skills and confidence to build stronger relationships with other groups
    - Some young and/or vulnerable UK Muslims do not have a strong sense of how their faith relates to relations with the non-Muslim majority; they are vulnerable to dangerous extremist narratives which distort Islam's teachings

Sending Dialogue Society publications to a meticulously prepared target list helps to inspire and empower positive engagement.

The ten manuals provide tangible ideas, know-how and resources to support people to reach out to one another and strengthen their communities.
In Dialogue in Islam, Ahmet Kurucan and Mustafa K Erol give a readable introduction to the relationship between Islam and dialogue, empowering Muslims to counter extremist interpretations and to engage with confidence.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To inspire community groups, faith groups and individuals to proactively bring communities together

» Widely distributing the Community Dialogue Manuals, which present and explain 35 tried and tested simple community dialogue projects

    What success will look like

We will email and call recipients to find out whether they have been inspired to undertake dialogue initiatives

    Aim 2

To give people the tools and confidence for community dialogue

» Widely distributing the Community Dialogue Manuals, which provide advice, checklists and over one hundred sample letters, emails and forms

    What success will look like

We will email and call recipients to find out whether they have undertaken community dialogue initiatives, and whether they have been successful

    Aim 3

To encourage Muslims in proactive, positive intercultural engagement

» Distributing 'Dialogue in Islam', which draws on the Qur'an and Sunnah to explain that dialogue is an integral part of the fabric of Islam

    What success will look like

We will collect feedback from Muslim recipients of 'Dialogue in Islam' and the manuals and find out if the publications have changed their attitudes to intercultural engagement

    Aim 4

To help young Muslims and vulnerable Muslims to counter extremist narratives

» Distributing Dialogue in Islam to mosques, university Islamic societies, and community groups

    What success will look like

We will seek feedback from recipients of 'Dialogue in Islam', inquiring if it has changed their attitudes to intercultural engagement or helped them challenge extremist positions

    Aim 5

To build trust and respect between different cultural and religious groups in the UK

    » All of the above!

    What success will look like

We will collect feedback from recipients of the publications on impact on their attitudes and on contact/relationships between different local groups

  • Impact

The project will contribute to improved intercultural understanding in many diverse areas of the UK by empowering proactive engagement in community-building dialogue.

It will also play a part in definitively undermining damaging extremist interpretations of the Islamic sources and in helping young UK Muslims to develop strong, authentic senses of identity.

Recipients of manuals may have questions or need additional support to have the confidence to undertake projects. Covering letters with the manuals provide contact details for free consultancy.

There is a risk of sending publications to organisations who will not be inclined to use them. We initially send just one or two carefully chosen publications per organisation, explaining that we can send others if requested.

We will compile feedback and testimonials from recipients of publications and send reports to donors by email.

  • Background

Publications will be sent throughout the UK to handpicked community centres, mosques, university Islamic societies, and educational institutions.

While the manuals should be of use to diverse community groups, and 'Dialogue in Islam' is accessible to non-Muslims, we are especially looking to support and empower Muslim communities with this particular project. A lot of the publications will go to towns and cities with significant Muslim populations.
