Children and Health
Working in partnership with local primary schools and child care providers we aim to provide health and fitness classes for children aged 6 to 11 year olds. We aim to instil a knowledge of why keeping active and eating healthy is important to promote a lifetime of healthy living.
February 2014 - July 2014

There is evidence to indicate that children are less active in todays society due to lack of access to green space, fear of risk of playing unsupervised and the lure of computer games/TV as entertainment preventing a more active lifestyle. In south Islington in particular a lack of access to affordable play opportunities and open space for children to play in means that they do not get the chance to participate in physical activities to promote healthy living and child development.
We aim to provide after school keep fit classes for children aged 6 - 11 years old that include learning exercises that can be done at home, in groups or individually. Children will learn relaxation techniques and discover methods that they can adapt and enjoy. Through play children will learn the importance of activity for healthy development and be encouraged to adopt healthy habits that promote physical activity.
Promote participation in physical activities for children.
Activities» Run 20 keep fit and healthy living workshops for children aged 6 to 11 years.
» Engage local primary schools and child care providers in promoting workshops.
What success will look like
Engage 30 children aged 6 to 11 years old in regularly participating in workshops
Encourage parental engagement in the learning process of healthy living and child development
Activities» Provide social coffee afternoons for parents to engage them in conversation and learning whilst children are participating in activities.
What success will look like
Engage 20 parents in attending coffee afternoons and engaging in health promotion discussions.
Children encouraged to engage in physical activity on a regular basis and parents have an increased knowledge about healthy living. Follow up monitoring will track participants continued engagement in services provided locally and in particular in physical activity classes provided at the Peel Centre for children and young people. An evaluation questionnaire will be used for parents to determine increases in knowledge over the course of the project and beyond.
Lack of participation - The Peel is an established provider of services and has a wide network of contacts with other providers. We are able to engage directly with children and parents to ensure that the workshops are marketed at our target audience.
Unavailable premises or tutor - we are the freehold owner of a large indoor sports facility and have identified a tutor suitable to run the workshops in partnership with our OFSTED registered after school child care project.
Through our website and annual report we will update donors on the outcomes of the project and any lessons learnt from evaluation that will assist us to develop future project work to meet the needs identified by the project.

A modern multi purpose fully accessible community centre with large indoor sports hall facility based in the heart of the King's Cross area of south Islington. The centre is home to a variety of community projects serving all sections of the community and hence is well used by hard to reach groups such as BAME communities.
The project is based in an area within the top 10% of the deprivation index and has high levels of unemployment, lack if access to affordable paly facilities or green space for children to play. There are high numbers of social housing and single parents and hence a demand for facilities for children to be able to play safely and supervised.
We have an extensive history of working with children and families in the local area, a reputation as a provider of high quality services, registered with OFSTED as a child care provider and high quality fully accessible premises that parents and children utilise for other activities.
