Working With Men

Working With Men supports boys and young men who are socially excluded or from disadvantaged backgrounds, to help them achieve their full potential to become productive and active members of society. We focus on transitional times in life such as starting school, getting a job or becoming a parent.

    Need

    We are trying to significantly reduce the number of boys and men, particularly from socially excluded or disadvantaged backgrounds, who are unable to achieve their full potential to become productive and active members of society. We work with young men primarily to help them navigate through their issues and to find a positive pathway.

    Solution

    We offer a range of support techniques that are tailored to the individuals needs. These include one to one support sessions, mentoring, group work and activities in a variety of settings, such as schools and community venues.

    Case Study. John was in a gang, involved in knife crime, excluded from mainstream education. WWM mentored and supported him through this period. He resumed education, left the gang and knife crime and is now part of the British Judo team.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To support NEET young men to become EET.

    Activities

    » Outreach street based detached work in the afternoons and evenings.
    » Deliver mentoring and guidance support on issues around education, employment, training and housing.
    » We allow young people the space to talk openly and give them honest straightforward feedback and support.

    We use pre and post intervention monitoring questionnaires, as well as external evaluations where appropriate.


    Aim 2

    To support fathers positive engagement and involvement with their children.

    Activities

    » We run Expectant Fathers courses to build new fathers confidence, in terms of their role, skills and ability to support their partner and baby.
    » We run group and one to one sessions providing advice and support in relation to contact arrangements, Child Maintenance and relationships.
    » We run activities for Dads to attend with their children.
    » We deliver targeted support for teenage fathers.

    We use pre and post monitoring of fathers levels of engagement, involvement and confidence to gauge success.


    Aim 3

    To reduce offending and links to gangs of boys in schools.

    Activities

    » We run six week group interventions for boys to address their aggression and violence issues.
    » Facilitate whole school assemblies on conflict resolution strategies.
    » We run one to one mentoring sessions with boys showing higher level of need.

    We use Strengths and Difficulties questionnaires pre and post intervention and 6 weeks after the intervention to measure changes in behaviour.


  • Impact

    Impact

    Evidence based evaluations of our projects have shown that the work we do achieves significant impact. We have helped young fathers maintain contact with their children, found NEET young men education, employment and training and reduced risk of boys being excluded from school or involved in crime.

    Risk

    The main risk to WWM is not being able to secure core cost funding to allow us to continue our work. While all our individual projects are fully funded, raising the money needed for core costs is always difficult, particularly in the current economic climate. We have put in place a fundraising strategy to manage this risk and are progressing well. However, there is still currently a shortfall in core costs for this year that needs to be raised.

    Reporting

    Reports are produced for each individual project as required by each funder. An annual report is produced with the audited accounts each year to provide an overview of the charities activities and successes, which would be available to all donors.

  • Background

    Location

    WWM is a national charity, but the majority of our project work takes place in London. We work in some of the most deprived areas of London where we feel that we can affect the most change.

    Beneficiaries

    A variety of people benefit from our work. not only the service users who access our projects, but also their children, or families. All our beneficiaries are boys and men who are socially or economically disadvantaged, marginalised or isolated who are unable to achieve their full potential.

WWM have proven expertise in the difficulties and solutions of working with boys and men who are socially or economically disadvantaged, marginalised or isolated. Our work is evidence based and practice-led, rather than ideology or theory-led.
