  • Need

Sunderland suffers from high deprivation and the problems associated with this, including the highest levels of death directly related to alcohol in the country. Areas in Sunderland have the highest concentrations of child poverty in England- 8404 children receive free school meals. Sunderland spends £187m per year on the effects of child poverty, e.g. poor mental health, obesity, and unemployment. In 2015, 178 children were excluded from school, and under 16s committed 28% of racist incidents.

Tackle It uses coaching and workshop sessions to teach young people about positive choices which will impact on their academic and social lives. With rising levels of disengaged pupils in schools, Tackle It is seen as a needy tool using the power of football to re-engage and reinvest peoples hearts back into the community. There are specific workshops to focus on topics and areas of need for each group we engage. The project also provides young and vulnerable people with positive role models.

The project will have a sustained, long term impact on young people & families knowledge of & approach to issues such as health, wellbeing, citizenship, community & social impact. It will also have an impact on the attainment levels of young people and achievements of adults, demonstrated by monitoring increase in employability and life skills.

The largest risk to this project is a lack of funding. Foundation of Light, one of the largest football club foundations in the country, has a well developed fundraising strategy which helps preserve the longevity of this project. Foundation of Light have also forged links with the Football Foundation, Cestria Community Housing, Derwentside Homes, Caterpillar, Strategic Health Authority, and other partners who provide some financial support for this programme.

Achievements from the project are publicised across our website, matchday programmes and in press releases to the media. Major donors receive a report at the end of each academic term and an annual donor review which gives in-depth information about the project and its achievements.

  • Background

The Tackle It project will be based at a number of locations, including schools and community groups through Sunderland, South Tyneside and Durham. We will also base some activities at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland.

Directly, participants aged 7 through to adults will benefit through interaction in sessions and taking part in initiatives as part of the project. However, the project will impact on the whole community which will benefit from reductions in anti-social behaviour, general health and wellbeing of communities as well as the increased community awareness of young people.
