Our aim is to engage more people in creative activities, through workshops and projects for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. By widening the reach of the Arts Centre and placing learning at the heart of what we do, we will contribute to community wellbeing and individual development in Bridport

Bridport Arts Centre has offered creative opportunities to the local community to for many years. The scale and scope of interest and need has increased in recent years, however we don’t have the resources to meet that need. There are also many people in Bridport who do not access available opportunities due to multiple barriers, and who need proactive outreach, which is also beyond our capacity. We want to ensure that the benefits of a rich and diverse arts offer are available to all.
Our new Learning & Outreach plan was developed to respond to the needs of our community. The plan builds on recent work and will develop key partnerships with schools, community groups and regional partners to offer relevant and innovative creative projects. These include a junior and senior youth theatre, work with creative writing and a follow up to our very successful community radio project. We have a focus on children and young people but will work across all ages and backgrounds.
To engage new participants with the arts and extend the range of the learning & outreach programme.
Activities» • Develop a range of participatory theatre initiatives for children and young people aged 8 – 18.
» • Offer a range of programme making, broadcasting and technical opportunities through Bridport FM 2.
» • Offer creative writing opportunities with additional potential, e.g. to share work created through recording and broadcasting of radio plays.
» • Develop a plan to encourage non-participating groups.
We aim to involve at least 3000 people a year in the learning & outreach programme of which 10% will be new to our work.
To strengthen and develop our relationship with schools and young people.
Activities» • Sustain and develop the relationship with Bridport Youth Centre and develop relationships with other youth groups in the town.
» • Offer participation in the national Arts Awards through our youth theatre groups.
» • Offer two low cost places to young people (15 to 25) on all creative writing courses.
» • Offer high quality Continuing Professional Development opportunities for teachers.
We aim to engage every school in the Bridport primary pyramid in some aspect of our work plus at least 4 secondary schools from around the county.
To develop the profile of the learning & outreach programme to support its sustainability.
Activities» • Work with BAC marketing manager to use press and social media to reach project participants and profile end of project presentations.
» • Visit Bridport primary schools assemblies to talk about specific offers for children, young people and families.
» • Work with regional partners to programme and publicise work for young people.
» • Ensure close links with other aspects of BAC’s work, particular the live performance and visual arts programmes.
Success will be demonstrated by regular press coverage and a greater social media presence.
Fostering in people a sense of entitlement and ownership of their local arts centre.
Generating new generation of children & young people interested and engaged in the arts.
Developing life skills, and enhancing employment, training and opportunities through participating in arts activities.
We will track the progress of participants over the life of the project and measure impact through self evaluation. With young people we will include the input of teachers and parents.
The biggest risk to the project is a reduction in the capacity of the organisation to support and deliver the learning & outreach programme due to the uncertain economic climate. We are working hard to diversify our income streams and to become more sustainable, to ensure that we can meet our commitments to our leaning & outreach goals. We will not undertake aspects of the project unless we have the funds in place, and will run fundraising events specifically for the learning programme.
Our Learning Coordinator makes bi-monthly reports to our Board of Trustees and these reports will be made available to donors supporting the project. There will be a more detailed review undertaken annually, and a full evaluation at the end of the three year programme.

Bridport is a vibrant market town in West Dorset with a reputation for creativity and a lively arts scene. Bridport Arts Centre has been the cultural heart of the community for almost 40 years.
The main beneficiaries will be the people participating in the various activities in the programme.
The friends and families of participants will also benefit as audiences for project outcomes, and the wider community of Bridport will benefit through the positive impact on a large number of people in that community. Our community radio project will also directly explore the cultural heritage of the town leaving a lasting legacy.
Bridport Arts Centre celebrates it’s 40th Anniversary in 2014 and over that time we have proven our ability to lead on major creative projects. We have strong connections and partnerships around the town and beyond and are currently an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

This work will be led by our Learning Coordinator Kate Wilson, who has built up our Learning & Outreach programme over the last 3 years.
Support will be provided by Director Polly Gifford, who has 20 years of experience in the arts including 10 years working with learning programmes.
