Hand Project

The hand project (have ability not Disability) is an arts project for young people of school aged aimed at young people with a learning disability or barrier to learning , where they are given opportunity to take part in music arts crafts, drama and photography and to explore their gifts and talents

  • Need


    poor self esteem and low expectations of young people with a disability or barrier to learning . its also about tackling social exclusion and peer mentoring


    It will encourage young people to explore their gifts and talents and help them have the confidence to show others what they have achieved and will also enable them to get awards and qualifications through Asdan and Ars awards and Lamda exams

    Aim 1

    To enable youn people to achieve ,develop potential and grow in confidence


    » Schools workshops, gallery, drama workshops and a pantomime, help develop their own music bands, animation creation

    What success will look like

    Number of those taking part, feedback from parents carers and schools and whether the confidence levels of young people have improved over the time we run the project

    It will chang the perception within the community and their families an friends about the ability of young people with a disability or barrier to learning.
    We willenable those who wish to to become peer mentors and enable other younger children to do the things that they have had opportunity to do

  • Background


    North Durham and Sunderland 35% of people in the area have a disability of some kind and prospects of employment are not very high in the area especially with the children and young people that we work with.


    Young people with disabilities or a barrier to learning in the Sunderland and North Durham area, their carers parents and siblings

    Why Us?

    Because we are run by parent who are carers and have a great deal of experience of working with children with special needs. We are also very committed to what we are doing and are the only group of its kind in the area
