  • Need

The comprehensive content of HAT archive is currently mainly invisible to the public.
Although HAT already provides a busy enquiry and research service via phone, email and its website www.hatads.org.uk as well as personal visits by students, this involves labour-intensive searches by HAT staff. An online catalogue service with a keyword search facility will enable researchers to find, identify and order relevant material themselves.

HAT’s vision is to enable users to search the catalogue of the largest archive of UK advertising in the world from anywhere, at any time, including ‘on the go’ via web enabled mobile devices. Anyone will be able to view catalogues of thousands of records, discover images and data relating to past campaigns and instantly request digital copies of material.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To ensure the online catalogue is user-friendly and meets the needs of researchers at every level.

» HAT will work with HAT's web designer Itineris Ltd, and user group evaluators, to ensure the public online catalogue operates to a high standard

    What success will look like

We will run evaluation tests with the pilot catalogue with different user groups.

  • Impact

    1. HAT will be able to assist more researchers, more effectively and efficiently with their enquiries. These can be identified, counted and evaluated each year.
    2. The quality and importance of the contents of HAT archive will receive wider recognition and therefore attract extra sustainable investment from both old and new supporters of its charitable aims.
    3. The interactive nature of the new service can facilitate online dialogue resulting in new digital archive offers to HAT.

    1. The risk of necessary funding not being available:
The public launch of this project will be delayed until funding can be found another way.

  • Background

Although HAT Archive is physically located in Raveningham Norfolk, the beauty of this project is that it will facilitate access to its unique archive and library remotely from anywhere in the world.

Students, teachers, academics, communications industry researchers, authors, private individuals etc. It is possible that HAT will discover new audiences and supporters that it hasn't currently identified.
We are planning for links to HAT's online catalogue to become available via UK university library intranets through a marketing and promotion campaign.
