The Mango Tree Mawego Girls Secondary School

The Mawego Girls School will provide good quality secondary education for orphaned and vulnerable girls in a nurturing positive learning environment which will enable them to raise their academic standards so that they have the opportunity to go on to study at college or university.

  • Need


    An estimated one million children of school-going age are not attending school. Up to 13,000 Kenyan girls drop out of school every year as a result of pregnancy alone. HIV prevalence in Kenyan women aged between 15 and 24 is five times as high as their male counterparts. Better educated girls are more likely to bring a sustainable income into the household. They are also less likely to marry early more likely to practice family planning and their children will have a higher standard of living.


    The school will enable 320 girls to learn English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, French, Kiswahili, Religious Studies, Home Science, Business Studies, and Agriculture. The school will also provide social worker care, sexual health education and peer-to-peer mentoring to raise their confidence and self esteem. The majority of these girls will achieve significant pass marks to go on to college and university.

    Construct and fit out a girls secondary boarding school in Mawego, north Rachuonyo District, Kenya.


    » Construction phase one - classrooms, administration block, boarding houses, bore hole, drainage system and piped water.
    » Construction phase two - additional boardings houses and classrooms, kitchen block, library, laboratories, farm area
    » Fitting out phase one - chairs, tables, desks, IT equipment, boarding house beds and furniture.
    » Fitting out phase two - library, lab tables and equipment. Teaching equipment (incl musical instruments and sports equipment), farm equipment.

    What success will look like

    280 girls will be enrolled at Mawego Girls Secondary School by Jan 2015.
    320 girls will be enrolled by Jan 2016.

  • Impact


    By 2020 the Mawego school will have provided good quality secondary education to over 1,280 - roughly 400 of these girls will have graduated and will be studying at college, university or vocational training college.

    We will continue to support those orphaned students with fees for higher education and as part of The Mango Tree Kenya alumni society and Family Association will will track their progress and publicise their successes.


    The main risk is the financial risk.
    We have already secured £200,000 towards constructing the school. These funds have been reserved for the school. However Trustees have decided that construction phase one will only commence when we have enough resources for the school to be viable and able to generate a sustainable income through fees.


    The Mango Tree publicises our Annual Report every December. This is sent to all donors. In addition we report to specific donors on projects that they are funding, and have an internal reporting system with log frames and quarterly reports to track our progress against set targets and milestones.

  • Background


    Mawego location is in north Rachuonyo District in western Kenya. With a population of 307,126 people this district is extremely rural with a long history of political marginalisation, poor infrastructure and poor education provision. HIV and AIDS prevalence is 25%, with large numbers of orphans and widows. Dropout rates indicate gender differentiation from Standard 4 to Standard 6 reflecting high incidences of teenage pregnancy, early marriage and under-prioritisation of girls' education.


    Secondary school aged orphaned girls and their communities in Rachuonyo District will be benefit from this project. They have been particularly badly affected by the spread of HIV and AIDS leading to higher numbers of orphaned children than in other areas (47,700). Household income levels are low; unemployment is high. Poor school facilities, overcrowding, poor quality teaching and the burden of domestic work on girls has led to school dropout rates of up to an astonishing 50% in some areas.

    Why Us?

    The Mango Tree has been providing access to primary, secondary and tertiary education for orphans and vulnerable children for over ten years. The Mango Tree Kenya has been working in north Rachuonyo District since 2005. Their experienced and knowledgeable nurses, education staff and over 100 village volunteers have excellent relationships with the children they support as well as the wider local community, local leaders, local Government service providers and other NGOs in the area.

    Consolata Kunyada - Project Co-Ordinator

    Consolata is the Kenya Country Director. She has a vision for orphan care and improving girls education and will oversea and co-ordinate the project.

    Wilkister Ajwang - Mawego School Head Teacher

    Wilkister will be employed as the Head Teacher. With 10 years Head Teachership experience in a rural school she will be involved at all stages.

    Philip Ojwang - Education Programme Manager

    Manage construction process, procurement and student enrollment.

    Wycliffe - Community Development Project Manager

    Support construction process, community liaison, water engineering components and farm construction.
