  • Need

There are 35 girls sleeping in one room and the ages of these girls range from 6 to 18 years old. Additional dormitories will enable us to separate the age groups. Communal space is currently limited, the dining area and kitchen are also used as the yoga hall, activities hall and recreation hall. Areas for study are limited. The girls study on mats on the floor in the courtyard. The staff who live and work at Baale Mane sleep in are sleeping in the same dormitories as the girls.

Additional space will be provided: there will be a new dining hall and kitchen, additional dormitories with increased space for the older girls, a library, separate yoga and performance Hall and the new wing solely for the use of staff

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To comply with the Indian Federal Government Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act,

» Ensure that the facilities we build meet the requirements of this new legislation

    What success will look like

The act lays down quite precise requirements in terms of physical space. Our buildings will be constructed to meet these requirements

    Aim 2

To improve the physical space in which our children live

» The construction project will achieve this objective

    What success will look like

Our plans have been drawn up by a talented and creative architect: construction will lead to a dramatic improvement both in the quality and quantity of the space at the home

    Aim 3

To improve the learning outcomes for our children

» Additional facilities require personal study and for physical training will greatly assist in achieving our learning outcomes

    What success will look like

We will measure the improvement in academic attainment and excellence in physical activities such as dance, drama and yoga

    Aim 4

To be able to attract and retain staff of the highest quality

» Improvement of the physical infrastructure and personal facilities for staff will make our home more attractive to staff

    What success will look like

We will measure both staff retention and recruitment over a period of years

  • Impact

The Baale mane already achieves very positive outcomes for the girls in its care. Success will be demonstrated through periodic opinion surveys from the older girls, and reports from the local child welfare committee.

There is a risk that we will not raise sufficient money to complete the project. There is a risk that the construction is not of sufficient the high quality and that we hit problems during the construction phase. To mitigate these risks we will not start the project until we have received at least 75% of the funds required. We have also engaged an excellent local architect who will oversee the entire construction phase on our behalf

We produce regular newsletters and progress with the construction will be reported on in each of these. In addition, certain donors have their own specific reporting requirements with which we will adhere. Progress reports will also be reported on our website
