Reaching the most vulnerable children

To reach the most marginalised and vulnerable children in the world, GFC works with grassroot organisations to transform the lives of trafficked children, refugees, and child labourers and helps them regain their rights and pursue their dreams. We do everything we can to let kids be kids.

  • Need


    Millions of children around the world are born into a stark reality: will they work in mines and markets or go to school? Will they be trafficked into slavery or be free? Will they be child soldiers or students? These are staggering choices no child should face, yet around the world millions of children face them. They are virtually invisible to those around them and are forgotten in national policies and programmes. These children have the greatest needs, but too often fall through the cracks.


    GFC invests in grassroots, community-based organisations that operate under the radar to meet local needs in the most challenging settings. Our grantees tackle old problems in innovative new ways. They are responsive to local issues, well known and respected, and positioned to reach the most marginalised children in their communities. With GFC’s support they become sustainable long-term. As a result, GFC reached 1 million vulnerable children in the past year. Now, we want to reach more.

    Aim 1

    To develop pathways that transition children out of work and into school


    » Fund night schools to provide education to children who work during the day
    » Fund mobile classrooms to reach waste-picking communities as well as children who live and work in slums and on the streets
    » Rescue and rehabilitate child slaves before transitioning them into mainstream education
    » Facilitate supplemental learning opportunities, tutoring centres, libraries, and Saturday schools to help children succeed and stay in school

    3,700 children will enter informal education and then transition into mainstream schooling, training, or more progressive forms of employment

    Aim 2

    To empower adolescent girls so they can be healthy, educated, and safe


    » Education– convince parents to send daughters to school, provide scholarships so girls can afford an education, and create safe places to learn
    » Training – offer programmes that teach financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and skills such as tailoring and sustainable agriculture
    » Sexual and community education – teach early pregnancy prevention and protection from sexual abuse and exploitation, HIV, and child marriage
    » Advocacy training – help girls build confidence, raise their voices, and become change agents in their schools, neighbourhoods, and governments

    7,000 girls will enrol in schools and/or vocational training and will demonstrate an improved sense of wellbeing

    Aim 3

    To enrol children into mainstream schooling for the first time


    » Fund rural schools to create culturally relevant learning opportunities in traditional communities, particularly those with scarce resources
    » Provide bilingual education to make sure indigenous children, migrants, and refugees have equal footing in the classroom and beyond
    » Create educational opportunities for mentally and physically disabled children and work to reduce the stigma traditionally attached to their lives

    3,700 children will enter mainstream education and also advance through each academic year

  • Impact


    We build strong, sustainable grassroots organisations that, on average, treble in size over the course of our funding relationship. As a result, The Global Fund for Children transforms the lives of the world’s most vulnerable children. These children become free to grow into productive, caring members of society. They help their communities, break the cycle of poverty for their children, and become agents for change who pass on the benefits of their new knowledge to future generations.


    Many grantees operate in unsafe or unstable regions, including conflict zones or areas vulnerable to natural disasters. To safeguard against risks GFC continuously monitors and evaluates grantees. We provide discretionary grants to help rebuild after an emergency or take advantage of new opportunities. We also provide organisational support, build regional networks of grantees, and leverage funding from other organisations. All of this mitigates potential risks and builds sustainable grantees.


    Donors can opt to receive quarterly newsletter briefings and an Annual Report each autumn on developments and grantee stories. GFC’s website also features photos, videos, and press clippings of grantees featured in the mainstream media for donors interested in learning more.

  • Background


    GFC works with grassroot grantees that reach children in slums, tent camps, prisons, and rural villages in over 60 countries. These are some of the most vulnerable children in the world, yet international aid agencies and large organisations struggle to provide the services and programmes they need most. GFC builds grassroots networks that serve as a safety net to catch children—primarily in the developing world—who are most likely to fall through the cracks of big organisations.


    The world’s most vulnerable children will benefit from GFC’s work. They will grow up with the choice of becoming independent, productive, caring citizens of a global society. This is a choice they might not otherwise have been able to make. They will be able to break the cycle of poverty and give their own children a better life someday. As our grantees grow into stronger and more sustainable resources, not only will children benefit—so will the families and communities that need it most.

    We provide strategic funding to local leaders who offer innovative solutions to local problems. Through this approach, we have reached 9 million children in 79 countries since 1997. Because grantees are local, they are trusted and understand the needs of their communities. They have fresh solutions to old problems and adapt quickly to community needs and shifting contexts. Our strategic support helps our grantees achieve their vision, become sustainable, and reach more vulnerable children.
