Swindon Children's Scrapstore Van Appeal

We need to purchase a long wheel base transit van with a tail lift to transport the Scrapstore materials and resources to schools and community groups locally. We actively assist businesses by collecting their safe, surplus materials which are then taken to our resource warehouse.

  • Need

Our current vehicle is at the end of its life and we need to replace the van with a new vehicle to enable us to continue to collect resources from businesses transporting large and heavy items such as office furniture desks and filing cabinets to our warehouse resource centre. We then make these resources available to the local community families, schools, community groups, charities and individuals in Swindon and surrounding areas. We also deliver our resources to schools in the community.

The van we currently use is over 13 years old and has become very expensive to maintain, the Scrapstore van is essential to the delivery of all our projects and services. Purchasing a new van would enable us to be continue our work and be more economic and efficient. We will be able to work with more businesses providing local companies with the opportunity to demonstrate their core environment and social values whilst improving lives in our community as well as reducing waste and consumption.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Work in partnership with more local businesses and increase the number of collections weekly.

» We will use the new vehicle to collect resources from businesses 4 days a week instead of our current 2 day a week collections.
» We will increase the volume of resuable materials diverted fom landfill back into reuse for the benefit of the local community.
» Promote the reuse of environmentally friendly resources for use in recreation, educational and leisure-time actives.

We will record and monitor the number of collections from businesses and also quantify the amount in tonnes of materials that we divert from landfill each year back into reuse.

  • Impact

In the next five years all landfill sites in the UK will be full so the long term benefits of our project are to reduce the amount of quality redundant reusable resources from ending up in landfill sites. We are helping to make a massive difference to our community and to the environment. We will demonstrate our success by showing an increase in partnerships with local businesses and the community to progress our environmental principles and evaluations of the project.

There is a risk that the vehicle we are using could brake down due to mechanical problems as it is a very old vehicle. We have fostered close links with a local garage P&L Motors who are based near our warehouse store. They undertake thorough maintenance checks at regular intervals and do any maintenance work required to keep our vehicle on the road ensuring that our services are not interrupted. We also have the option to hire a commercial vehicle when neccessary to meet our commitments.

We will report to donors of this project via a monthly email report about the project, detailing the additional businesses and areas we have visited. We will also include evaluations of the increased amount of scrap resources collected for the community to access..

  • Background

Our services are accessible to all members of the Swindon community we will particularly target those areas and communities with the highest indices of deprivation. We will build on our existing relationship with childrens centres, schools and families in these areas to ensure those children from families on the lowest incomes access these resources to encourage recycling, & learning through creativity. We will also target the most rural areas where there is little or no public transport.

The Scrapstore benefits over 40,000 people in Swindon through the projects and services we provide. We supply many of the 121 local schools in the Swindon area; 60 infants & primary, 40 preschool, 11 secondary, 3 higher education and 7 special schools with resources. The Swindon Children's Scrapstore is completely unique and has been providing much needed resources to the Swindon community for the past 28 years. Many of the communities we work with are in deprived areas of Swindon.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are best placed to carry out this project as we are the only Scrapstore in Swindon. We have a proven track record working across the whole town with businesses, schools, pre schools, community groups etc. This project will use the experience and knowledge we already have in the waste industry as well as our current understanding of Swindon's communities.
