Sutton Foodbank

The Foodbank provides three days of emergency food to individuals and families in short term crisis. This can be caused by low income, benefit delay, job loss, ill health, relationship, debt, domestic violence, addiction and housing issues. It is open to residents in the London Borough of Sutton.

    Need

    Hidden Hunger in our communities. Some people are struggling to either live on a low income, or benefits with a low income or the benefit changes. This can lead to a choice between eating or heating.
    This affects single people but also families. There is a link between poor nutrition and lack of food and the ability of children to concentrate at school.

    Solution

    We are trying to get people back on track in a time of crisis through the provision of three days of emergency food. We also spend time listening to their specific situation and where appropriate signposting to other relevant agencies and services. For example, debt advice. We also offer a befriending service to clients who need short term support to meet certain goals eg getting a job.

    » We have four Foodbank sessions a week each two hours in duration. Clients come with a voucher having been referred by a front line care agency

    We keep statistics of numbers helped by post code, cause of crisis, referring agencys, weight of food given out and number of visits to the Foodbank


  • Impact

    Impact

    We would like to alleviate the effects of Food Poverty. We also would expect most people not to be recurring visitors to the Foodbank. That is, they get the crisis help they need. Where appropriate we would signpost for additional help and support so that we can offer a holistic approach to each person's situation.

    Risk

    The main risks are ongoing funding which would affect sustainability. We do not get any core funding from local or national government. We rely on donations from partnering churches and individuals. We are seeking to continue to raise the awareness of the Foodbank in order to sustain funding through promotional activities. We are also seeking local grants and are targeting local businesses and schools to give to the Foodbank.

    We do this online on our website and also via newsletters and e bulletins.

  • Background

    Location

    We are located in the London Borough of Sutton. Food is sorted and stored at Big Yellow. Food is distributed from three different locations.
    On a Monday and Friday between 12-2pm at Sutton Salvation Army; on a Wednesday at Apple Lodge between 6.30-8pm and on a Thursday between 12-2pm at Bishop Andrewes Church Building.

    Beneficiaries

    Sutton is generally a fairly affluent borough. However, there are areas where there is social and material deprivation. For example, there is a 7 year differential between parts of the borough in terms of life expectancy. There are also significant differences in eligibility for free school meals ranging from 2% to 50% in more deprived areas. More deprived areas also have significantly higher obesity and levels of diabetes as well as higher cancer rates and teenage pregnancies.

    Why Us?

    We are resourced with a good bank of volunteers from local churches and also the wider community. We are also in very good relationship with local front line care agencies and the council so are working towards a more multi-agency approach. Because we have been operating for a few years and have grown in response to increasing needs within the borough we have established good procedures, protocols and relationships.
