  • Need

Timespan’s pioneering work in the arts and culture sector during the last 26 years has attracted much publicity and the need for funding may not be immediately apparent. But, its core income streams are no longer reliable nor sufficient to provide a secure financial base. Without the endowment secured through Our Appeal, Timespan, one of Scotland’s most unique and innovative cultural centres, will be vulnerable to closure.

An expendable endowment will give Timespan the secure funding it needs year upon year to protect it from the vagaries of local government, fluctuations in tourism and escalating costs.
It would enable Timespan to continue its valuable work in safeguarding and sharing the area’s fascinating history, art and culture for a further 35 years. And, it would provide the firm footing Timespan needs to create a sustainable future.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To raise funds for Our Appeal to secure the Timespan rural endowment and a sustainable future.

» Seek support and donations by engaging a wide range of people in our work to help our cause.

    What success will look like

Success will be raising our target to have a substantial impact on our budget longer term and in the process developing relationships with people who are interested in our work.

  • Impact

If we achieve our goal, Timespan will be provided with a funding base for the next 35 years. This security will open up possibilities for Timespan to develop, put energy into and take up future opportunities and respond in a considered way as our future funding needs evolve. This project represents a new venture for a small rural museum and one where we can help other museums by sharing our experience.

There is a risk that we do not meet the Our Appeal endowment target. Even if our ambitious target is not met, we will still aim to establish an endowment fund, albeit a smaller one and your funds will provide significant benefits for our community. All donations are valuable in contributing to our cause and will provide support for vital core work enabling us to survive and develop.

We will report to donors according to their requirements measuring the success of this work by tracking progress against our aims and identified milestones. We hope to interest donors and share our experience in wider discussions about rural funding and sustainability for organisations like ours.

  • Background

Timespan is in part of the North Highlands with a fascinating heritage; remarkable archaeological features; Highland clearances; a thriving herring fishing industry in the 1800s and the Kildonan gold rush of 1869 and outstanding natural beauty and wildlife. Timespan’s unique position as a high quality art venue in a most beautiful setting attracts acclaimed artists to take inspiration from the area and its heritage placing a remote and rural community on an international stage.

Of only nineteen museums and heritage centres in the vast Highland council region, Timespan is unique in the way it bridges contemporary art, heritage and community. Promoting social cohesion as a venue with broad appeal for locals, visitors and researchers alike. The museum has successfully extended the realistic cramped conditions of its reconstructed croft, shop and blacksmith’s into the surrounding open landscape with an interactive heritage trail app.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

This project is at the heart of a sustainable future for Timespan. Our historical, geographical and relationship strengths place us in a great position to achieve our vision. Through Our Appeal we hope to raise the profile of the work of Timespan and create excitement about its achievements and its future. Timespan has reached a point where the elements that characterise the organisation have coalesced and are primed to move from strength to strength when the opportunities are made available.
