Project information

supporting each other through mental ilness

A support group for homeless women with mental health issues where they can share experiences and feel that they are not alone. Women can talk about their fears, different treatments they have had and encourage one another.

September 2013 - December 2014

Charity information: Street Talk

Street Talk
  • Need

The fear and isolation which homeless people living with a diagnosis experience with no family to support them. as well as the stigma attached to mental illness

The women will have a small community of others with similar problems who understand what they are going through. They will feel less isolated and less stigmatized as a result of the companionship and shared experiences.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To enable women to share their experiences of living with mental illness and support one another.

» Provide a group which will meet weekly where women can share their experiences and support one another.

    What success will look like

Women who have not been able to talk about their mental illness will feel able to talk about their experiences. Women who have not had treatment will get the help they need.

  • Impact

Women who have been living with undiagnosed mental illness who have not had treatment will get a diagnosis, start treatment and begin to see permanent change in the quality of their life as well as in their health. They may get back in touch with family, move off the street into a hostel, start a training or employment.

Homeless women who are living with mental illness are hard to reach. We have run a pilot project at a day centre for vulnerable women to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalised women will take part and the uptake has been good.

We will produce a newsletter every three months with stories of the themes taken up by the group and the progress individual women have made. (The identity of women taking part will not be revealed0

  • Background

Drop in day centre for homeless women in Kings Cross London.

Homeless women with mental health issues. These women are often extremely isolated and vulnerable with little or no support. It is very frequently a mental health issue which has led to their becoming homeless in the first place.
